A LARGE PAIR OF CARVED MARBLE 'MEDICI LIONS' IN THE 'GRAND TOUR' MANNER, 20TH CENTURY Swept plinth bases and further modern white cream wood pedestals the lions 97cm wide, 92cm high including plinth bases, 193.5cm high overall Provenance: Barnwell Manor, Northamptonshire. Windsor House Antiques. Acquired from Freemans Philadelphia, 6th October 2000 lot 1077 $24,000. Originally from the estate of Loice and the late Reverend Wilbar Gouker. From their home Oaks Cloister, Philadelphia- designed and furnished by the architect Joseph Miller Hudson. The lions were placed at the foot of the stairs and Hudson is said to have acquired them on one of his trips to Florence. Please note, the provenance for this lot has been updated and expanded. Please see our website for the full updated details. The original ancient marble lion on which these are based was first recorded by Flaminio Vacca in 1594, by which time it had been acquired by Grand Duke Ferdinand for the Villa Medici in Rome. Vacca carved a companion lion out of a giant marble capital found behind the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the original and companion pair were then placed in the loggia of the Villa Medici before being moved in 1797 to the entrance of the loggia dei Lanzi in Florence.Condition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. There has been discussion as to the exact nature of the material the lions are carved from. Surfaces are dirty with some dirt and scuff marks but would suggest that they have been heavily cleaned/polished within the last 30-40 years and original surface patina lost rendering the appearance to more like calcite alabaster than marble. Certainly, although it has scratches to the surface- testing it with a fingernail does not seem to produce a fine soft residue and they 'ring' well to a knock. The slight chips to the surface reveal a 'sugar' twinkle to the underlying structure but light penetrates the surface much more than would expect from a variegated marble. The plinth however is a harder denser marble- less translucent and with brighter sparkling visible to the chipped sections.Visible uneven smoothing marks visible to underside of legs and interior of mouths. Some natural flaws and wear including scratches and marks- conchoidal mark to left cheek of one lion. Under UV there is indication of some restoration to this point- and to some spots on other lion's face. The edges are also showing signs of being tidied up and both tails are slightly flat in colour- 1 with a flaw visible at the base. Base edges and corners with numerous areas of knocks and loss- additionally some more scuffs and knocks to pedestals. Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request. He then worked as an Archaeological artist at Newcastle University before moving to London to pursue an art career. Rod exhibited and sold paintings and began a parallel career as an illustrator, represented in London and New York. He also began to create 3D sculptural works for Film, TV and other clients. In 1997 he formed Armordillo Ltd, where he pioneered and developed the use of sculpting with sprayed polyurethane resins and foams within the film industry, starting with 650 suits of armour for Ridley Scott’s Oscar winning film Gladiator. Since its inception, Armordillo has been engaged in research and development into a wide range of experimental sculptural processes. Along with their specialist team, Rod and Armordillo have created works for numerous well known film and TV projects. In recent years Rod has been joined by his son Louis Vass, who has added his artistic abilities and highly developed digital art skills to the Armordillo portfolio. His 3D designs have brought a high level of sophistication to the design process – enabling realistic 3D images of design work to be viewed in situ even before construction has begun. Their work ranges in scale from intricately detailed models to huge set pieces measuring thousands of square feet. The current large sculptures at Summers Place reflect their interest in the combination of traditional artistic skills with the latest technology. Most of these sculptures started life as pieces created for Film, TV and live performance. All have been re-worked and re-purposed as freestanding statement pieces, suitable for outdoor or indoor display. The materials are relatively lightweight, allowing for easy installation in a range of locations. They are completely weatherproof and can be left outdoors indefinitely. Each piece has a makers plaque authenticating it as a genuine Rod Vass creation. The artists are currently concentrating primarily on private commissions and are happy to consider proposals for sculptural designed pieces at any scale. Garden OrnamentGarden Statuary Film Prop

Lot 58

A LATE VICTORIAN INLAID MAHOGANY QUARTER-CHIMING EIGHT-DAY LONGCASE CLOCKUNSIGNED, CIRCA 1900 INCORPORATING EARLIER ELEMENTSThe triple-train movement with anchor escapement, chiming the quarters on eight bells and sounding the hour on a coiled gong, the 12 inch brass break-arch dial with silvered Roman numeral chapter ring and subsidiary strike/silent selection dial to arch, in a 'pagoda' pedimented case inlaid in the Sheraton manner with an urn within foliate husk borders to the trunk door flanked by brass stop-fluted quarter columns, the panelled base further inlaid with a musical trophy.245cm high including finials, 51cm wide, 24cm deepProvenance: Borde Hill House, West SussexCondition Report: As catalogued the movement is later then the dial and case with the mechanism dating to around 1900. The movement appears complete however is in dirty/neglected condition and the plates appear slightly out of square suggesting that the movement has at some point received a bump to one corner. A competent clockmaker should be able to rectify this issue during the required cleaning/overhaul of the mechanism. The matted dial centre (disc within the chapter ring) has been replaced to allow the winding holes to correlate with the present movement; the recessed subsidiary seconds dial has most likely been transposed over from the original late 18th century dial centre. The dial otherwise is in sound original albeit dirty/discoloured condition. The case is generally in good condition. All of the inlay is circa 1900 whilst the background veneers and structure are late 18th century. The plinth top moulding has a bruise neat the centre most likely from one of the weights being bashed against it during removal or installation otherwise faults to the case are very much limited to minor bumps, scuffs, shrinkage, wear and other age related blemishes.Clock has pendulum, three weights but no case key or winder. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request.
