Lot 6

A bronze sculpture of Horatio Viscount Nelson K.B Duke of Bronte, Vice Admiral of the White, circa 1895, approx 71 cms. Nelson is depicted standing in his naval regalia and tricorn hat on a plinth of ships beneath the waves, the base of the plinth is incised with the battles Nelson in which he distinguished himself including The Battle of the Nile, The Battle of Copenhagen, Battle of Trafalgar and the Battle of St Vincent.  Footnote: Henry Mansell Furse was born in Egham, Surrey in 1860. He is noted for his relatively short production period due to an illness which led him to being an invalid for the last forty years of his life. Furse studied under Herkomer before attending the Slade School. He worked at the British Museum from 1881 to 1887, after which he produced many sculptures. Provenance: This bronze has been removed from The Nelson, a public house in Broadstairs, when it closed its doors in 2014. It became a pub in the mid 19th century when brewer Richard Tomson bought it, Tomson was keen to commemorate the heroes of the French wars and the fact that Nelson's corpse was on the deck of Victory when she dropped anchor in Viking bay on her return from the Battle of Trafalgar and thus named the pub The Nelson where this sculpture has stood in pride of place. -

The clock having blue-on-white Roman hour numerals, surrounded by further 5 minute numbered to outer track, sculpted steel hands, 19th century marquetry encasement of ebonized wood and brown tortoiseshell inlaid with brass and cast with foliate gilt metal mounts, surmounted with a classical gilt brass putti, case interior is inlaid to the door and a radial-lozenge tiled floor fine, tall recessed arched side windows, to reveal a brass movement with twin barrel, outside countwheel bell striking movement with verge escapement regulated by a pendulum, brass black plate engraved Jean Jacques Fieffé approx 52 h x 25 w cms.  -  Condition Report This clock has not been wound or tested.

A 19th century Majolica statue of a moustachioed Cavalier carrying a drum, raised on a shaped stepped plinth, height 82cm (af).Condition Report: - Unfortunately, has had extensive restoration. The figure appears to have been off the base. Visible restoration to the front calf and further restoration to the left leg and tree stump, just below the knee. Also restoration visible to the left hand. Otherwise, appears ok.

A chrome plated greyhound figure group depicting a greyhound in full stride above a wave, raised on a two-section hardstone plinth, bearing signature 'Déric', height 22cm, length 46cm.Condition Report: - Rather grubby, the chrome plated finish is starting to split in areas - most notably to the wave. Loss of plated finish to the wave by the greyhound's back foot and the back foot is also not secured. Light surface scratches visible. Otherwise, appears to be in ok condition.

A pair of Art Deco style painted spelter figures of young ladies, raised on hardstone plinths, one bearing signature to the marble base, height of tallest 34cm (2).Condition Report: - The shorter of the two figures has an inscribed signature to the marble plinth that reads 'Lorenzl' and has likely been later painted. Appears in overall ok condition. The second figure has become detached from the base, showing epoxy resin residue, suggesting it has been reattached at some point. Minor rubbing to the painted finish, but otherwise appears ok.

As mentioned in the description, the top name is indistinct, due to being smudged. Further scratch marks and wear to the silvered dial. The chrome bezel has pitting showing through. There is a small loss to the front left corner of the clock black base plinth. Slight issues to the square edges of the square section pots. There is no key or pendulum present, so unable to comment on the function of the clock, although it is ticking at the point of cataloguing.

JOSEF LORENZL (1892-1950); a cold painted bronze figure of a clown playing a concertina, on circular base, signed verso, raised on a black hardstone plinth, height 21cm.Condition Report: - The black hardstone plinth is a later addition and has seemingly been repaired, with a crack visible from the right-hand side and across the front lower section. Scuff marks also visible to the sides, with minor nibbling to the chamfered edge. Minor loss to the painted finish throughout the figure. Clear signature verso. Slightly grubby, but otherwise ok.
