Follower of Orazio Marinali (Venice, 1643-1720), a North Italian sculpted white marble bust of the philosopher Heraclitus, early 18th century, the bearded subject portrayed cloaked and gazing to sinister, on an integral shaped plinth, 29cm high, 23cm wide Condition Report: The bust bears the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age. The marble has darkened in places and is a little worn with some slight pitting particularly to drapery, possibly the result of having spent time out of doors. A handful of old chips to the edges of the scarf, as well as an old loss to the right eyebrow. There is a casting join to the extended left arm, and there is a little movement between both parts, though it is stable and firmly attached.There is a seam surrounding the foot, where it appears to be inset in the base. A French patinated bronze ewer, to the model by Sigisbert-Francois Michel (1728-1811), 19th century, the ovoid and scroll handled body surmounted by a bearded triton holding the horns of a dolphin or other sea creature, above a swag of rushes, descending to a waisted circular socle and square plinth, 46cm high, 22cm wideThe present aquatic-themed urn is derived from a plaster model by the sculptor Sigisbert-Francois Michel, exhibited at the Academy of St Luke in Paris in 1774.The model proved to be so successful, that it was soon reinterpreted by various sculptors in different media, such as John Flaxman, who created a version of the ewer called 'Sacred to Neptune' for Josiah Wedgwood in circa 1775 (see Victoria & Albert Museum, London 2397-1901).An early cast of this model, accompanied by its Bacchic-themed counterpart and heightened with gilt, is in the collection of the Getty Museum, Los Angeles, 2015.61.Another 19th century pair, similar in casting to the present lot, was sold at Christie's London, 22 May 2003, lot 39 (£14,340).Condition Report: The ewer bears the usual minor marks, scratches and scuffs overall consistent with age and use.The patina is dark overall and fairly even, with some slightly warmer tones where it's worn to the handle and edges of the socle.There are a handful of small circa 2-4cm patches particularly to the reverse and the edges of the ovoid body, where the surface seems slightly raised or inconsistent, which may indicate a lacquer or refreshed patination of the surface. There is also some slight flaking to the surface colour to the inside of the lip, and one or two tiny dents/knocks to the body.Structurally no damages have been detected at the time of writing this report.Condition Report Disclaimer

A George III mahogany breakfront secretaire library bookcase, circa 1780, in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, the dentil moulded arched pediment, above a pair of glazed doors and a glazed door to each side, all opening to adjustable shelves, the lower section with a secretaire drawer flanked by a drawer on each side, above pair of panel doors and a panel door on each side, all opening to a shelved interiors, on a moulded plinth base, 272cm high, 203cm wide, 56cm deep For a related design of bookcase, see Chippendale: Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, Third Edition [1762], Tiranti's Reprint, plate No XCF, 'Library Bookcase'. Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use.Old chips and splits. Two larger splits, one to the side of the upper section and one to the surface beneath the central doors (see images) Some small losses (see additional images for visual reference). The lock the lower cupboard door is a period replacement. Later metal catch to central glazed doors. The lock plate to central doors is detached but present. No key is present. One side door to the upper section and one side door to the lower section are locked, all others are open. Some small amounts of filler to surface in places. Water marks to the plinth base. Some of the 'teeth' to the dentil moulding of the cornice lacking. Section of moulding to one side of the lower section detached but present. A smaller section of moulding to the other side is lacking. Glass appears original. Some later putty securing. As often seen with library bookcases, there are areas of indentation / scratching where two adjacent doors are opened and the key or engaged lock of one knocks into the frame of the other door (see images). Circle of Ignaz Günther (1725-1775), a large Austrian or Bavarian sculpted limewood model of an Angel, mid-18th century, portrayed standing and fully draped, looking to dexter and holding a fragmentary cornucopia, on a scrolled plinth, 112cm high overallThe handling and treatment of the angelic subject show great similarities to works by Bavarian Rococo sculptor Ignaz Günther, including the Archangel in his Annunciation group at the Parish church at Weyarn, and his 'Schützengel' at the Bürgersaalkirche in Munich. Further examples of kneeling and standing angels by sculptors of the South German tradition are illustrated in: Christine Hertel, Pygmalion in Bavaria, The Sculptor Ignaz Günther and Eighteenth-century Aesthetic Art Theory, Pennsylvania, 2011.The renditions of angels by Gunther's mentor Paul Egell, and his contemporary Johan Baptist Straub are of particular interest.Condition Report: Some radial movement to wings, and evidence of previous re-attachment. Loss to left hand as evident from photographs.Smaller losses to hair, right hand and right toes. Restoration to right foot where there is an old split, also reaching across the base.Evidence of old worm activity, though no longer appears to be active.Further, shorter old splits to sections of the toga and parts of the wings.Likely previously polychromed and at one point stripped. Rinaldi F and dated 1853, the putto 100cm high, 115cm high overall including moulded plinth and square basePaduan sculptor Rinaldi trained at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Venice before studying under Antonio Canova. (1796-1867), the sitter portrayed facing forwards and with serene visage, signed and dated London 1868, 76cm high, presented on an associated veined black marble plinth, overall height 178cm Provenance: the Ducommun dit Verron collectionNoble was one of Britain's leading portrait sculptors, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy from 1845 until his death. Several of his busts of royalty and political figures, including a portrait bust of Prince Albert, are included in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.Condition Report: The drapery and edges of the truncation are a little scuffed and scratched in places, with a handful of small chips and losses. More pronounced area of scuffing to the lower left of the drapery and the reverse.The marble is quite creamy in colour though the face (and to a lesser extent the right shoulder) has some slightly yellower mottling, and there is darkening to the reverse particularly under the shoulders. Small scratched area to nose, and a tiny loss to the right inner ear.Overall in presentable condition.The modern associated plinth bears usual minor marks and scuffs and has some rubbing to gilt capital but is overall in presentable order. A George IV mahogany dwarf open bookcase, circa 1825, 78.5cm high, 80cm wide, 30cm deep Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use.No significant condition issues with exception of dark indented scratches/ marks towards centre of plinth (see catalogue image) . There are a few additional marks to the top and to the plinth. There are indented marks running the length of the sides. Some fading to the top in particular. G. ADAMS Sc LONDON 1876, 80cm high, presented on a tapered oak plinth, overall height with plinth approximately 193cm Provenance: The Ducommun dit Verron collectionCondition Report: Restoration to nose, and a further restored crack to the right shoulder and lapel which runs underneath the chin and just touches the left lapel. Further repair to rear of socle.Some yellowing to marble particularly to the coat, and with more significant darkening to the reverse.Please see images for visual reference to condition.Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 520

Donato Barcaglia (Italian, 1849-1930), lo Spazzacamino, a sculpted white marble model of a street urchin, the boy portrayed in rustic dress and with a half eaten loaf of bread and a brush tucked under his left arm, seated on a fluted and shaped plinth and raised on a further naturalistically modelled base with foliage, inscribed D. Barcaglia Milano to the reverse, on a further moulded circular plinth, 79cm high; presented on a further green serpentine marble columnar pedestal, approximately 184cm high overallDonato Barcaglia was born in Pavia and trained at the Accademia di Brera in Milan. He became well-known as a portrait sculptor, though during his long career he also sculpted a number of allegorical and social genre groups such as this urchin boy. A version of this model by the sculptor sits in Paddington Street Gardens, Marylebone. This 'Street Orderly Boy' was presented to the parish of St Marylebone during the Second World War.Condition Report: One or two small losses to foliage behind and beside the plinth, also evidence of old repairs in these same spots, where there are remnants of clear residue. Possible very subtle restorations to right ankle and hat brim. One or two small chips to the lowermost edge of the base (though the carving is quite naturalistic and intentionally coarse there). The outline of the seat is also a little irregular though again this is likely the design. The marble is quite an even, creamy colour with one or two spots of slightly yellow-ish discolouration and a blue scuff mark to the corner of the seat. Very slight sugaring in areas particularly the brush, though this doesn't detract and overall the marble appears smooth, and has possibly been gently cleaned.The column has a few scuffs and nibbles, and currently has a small bit of wood between two of the upper sections perhaps for support. One or two of the veins of the plinth show evidence of filling.Condition Report Disclaimer

A French sculpted white marble statue of a Pleurant or Mourner, 19th century, after a late 14th/early 15th Burgundian tomb sculpture, portrayed cloaked and holding a cap in his hand, on a canted rectangular section base, 43.5cm high Condition Report: Usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age, and areas of darkening to marble. The statue shows evidence of old repair in places including to the hood, the lower right portion of the drapery, and the left shoulder. There is also a small chip to the left shoulder, and a handful of further small chips to the edges of the plinth. A polychrome painted plaster or composition anatomical model of a horse, early 20th century, possibly German, the bones and organs with numbers, mounted to an ebonised rectangular plinth, 63cm high, the plinth 53 x 19cmCondition Report: Usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age and use, as well as some dust in the recesses.The exposed bone rear leg is attached to the body with a pin, and comes loose quite easily, and may benefit from being more firmly attached.Small hairline surface crack to front left hoof, and one or two further minor surface nicks. One small chip to the tip of the nose. Some of the shallow inconsistencies to the surface may also be a result of the casting process.Minor areas of scratching and scuffing to paint, particularly to neck, ear and near mane. There also seems to be a pale wash or mottling to the painted upper part of the 'covered' side of the body, though this may be something that could possibly be addressed by a gentle clean. The plinth has repaired cracks to the front, left side and rear as well as one or two losses to corners. The stone is quite porous and as a result there are shallow surface losses overall. A set of three stone composition garden urns on plinths, 20th century, the fluted and everted bodies loosely of thistle form, raised on waisted socles and stepped square section bases, 109cm high, 60cm diameterThese unusual vases recall the 'Lotus' and 'tulip' shapes popularised by stone composition manufactory of Austin and Seeley during the later years of the 19th century. Vases of this type appear as early as the 1840s trade catalogue of the firm. Condition Report: Each of the surfaces worn and slightly weathered commensurate with age and outdoor exposure, including some lichen/moss.Each vase body has two long cracks running down each side.One has an old repair between the body and waisted socle, where light brown residue is visible.
