A VENETIAN CARVED FRUITWOOD FIGURE OF A RENAISSANCE PAGE BOY BY VALENTINO PANCIERA BESAREL (ITALIAN 1829-1902) the standing figure holding a tray, decorated with an armorial device, his doublet finely carved with strapwork and with detailed relief chainmail, his belt hung with a small bag, his shoes realistically carved to imitate leather, the circular base signed 'V. Besarel Venezia', standing on an ebonised plinth with painted panels to imitate marble and porphyry 164.3cm high Catalogue Note Valentino Panciera, known as Besarel, was born in Zoldo near Belluno on 29th July 1829. He belonged to a family of carvers and carpenters but his style was heavily influenced by the 17th century sculptor Andrea Brustolon. During the 1860s he established his workshop in Venice on the Grand Canal. He soon became famous for creating exquisite sculpture and furniture for wealthy clients, even royalty, Edward, Prince of Wales was a known patron. At the age of fifty-six, through carelessness he cut off the fingers of his right hand. However, with his strong willpower and the use of prosthesis he continued to work. In 1878 he exhibited at the Paris Universelle Exposition where he won a gold medal. He died in Venice in 1902.
A FINE 19TH CENTURY FIDDLEBACK MAHOGANY TWIN PEDESTAL PARTNER'S DESK BY GILLOWS C.1860 the rectangular top with a moulded edge and inset with four panels of later gilt tooled green leather, one side with a central hinged slope, with a detachable rest, on a ratchet, the other side of the desk with a full length hinged slide-out slope on a ratchet and with a detachable rest, the front with three mahogany lined frieze drawers, the central drawer stamped 'Gillow', with three further drawers to each pedestal, with hinged Wellington-type locking bars, each with a sliding cover to reveal a key escutcheon, the sides with pull-out slides above twin panels, the back with three frieze drawers, the central one stamped 'Gillow', above a pair of cupboards, each enclosing a shelf, the kneehole with panelled corner brackets, on a plinth base with centrally located castors, with replaced gilt ring handles 81.8cm high, 149cm wide, 94cm deep Catalogue Note A design for a desk with the same configuration of hinged writing surfaces and pull-out slides, but with two legs to the front, features in the 'Gillows Estimate Sketch Books', 12th January 1860 pl.6397, City of Westminster Archives. It was produced for 'Messrs B & K for Rall Esq. A mahogany writing table.'

'PRINCE PALATINE' A LARGE EQUESTRIAN BRONZE BY ADRIAN JONES (1845-1938) the naturalistic base inscribed 'Thomas Pilkington's Prince Palatine aged 5 years', signed 'Adrian Jones' and dated '1913', raised on an oak plinth 59.5cm high, 71cm long Catalogue Note 'Prince Palatine' (1908-24) was a thoroughbred racehorse named after County Palatine of Lancaster. He was bred by Colonel William Hall-Walker and was sold to Sir Thomas Pilkington as a yearling for £2,000. He was the dominant horse in British racing in 1912 and 1913, winning the Ascot Gold cup twice. In 1913 he was sold for a record price of £45,000 to Jack Barnato Joel to stand at stud at Childwick Bury stud.
