EAST AFRICAN STOOLPOSSIBLY TANZANIA, EARLY 20TH CENTURY carved wood, the circular seat held up by four finely carved figures with inlaid eyes, wearing loincloths and standing on plinth bases48cm tallProvenance:Private collection, Scotland.Note:Stools in the present style appear to have been carved for the colonial market in the early 20th century. Examples such as this show such similarity in form and style that it is fair to assume they were the product of a single workshop. In the past they have been catalogued as South African, but it appears more likely they are of East African, likely Tanzanian origin.
