Yves Kleins Schwammskulpturen zählen zu den bedeutendsten Werkgruppen innerhalb der Kunstgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts.Wir danken dem Yves Klein Archiv, Paris für die freundliche Beratung.PROVENIENZ: Privatsammlung Süddeutschland. Yves Klein, geboren 1928 in Nizza, ist eine der schillerndsten Künstlerfiguren im 20. Jahrhundert. Sicherlich wird ihm die Kreativität bereits in die Wiege gelegt, sind doch Mutter und Vater Yves Kleins ihrerseits beide Künstler. Yves Kleins Talent äußert sich zunächst vielgestaltig, denn er spielt in einer Band, komponiert, übt sich im Judo und entdeckt seine Leidenschaft für das Malen. Schon Mitte der 1940er Jahre ist die Monochromie eine zunehmend bedeutende Größe im Werk. 1947 trifft Yves Klein den Künstler Arman, mit dem ihn eine lange und enge Freundschaft verbinden soll. In den 1950er Jahren finden erste Ausstellungen statt, zunächst im privaten Rahmen, dann zunehmend in Galerien. Zu einer der wichtigsten Förderinnen Yves Kleins wird bald Iris Clert, eine Pariser Galeristin. Immer deutlicher offenbaren nun die Kunstwerke in ihrer Konzentration auf eine einzige Farbe das wesentliche Kennzeichen der Kunst Yves Kleins, die ihren Höhepunkt 1957 in der Entwicklung eines einzigartigen ultramarinblauen Farbtons findet - dem `I.K.B. - International Klein Blue`. Dieses Blau ermöglicht Klein nicht nur, Abstraktes und Ungreifbares wie etwa die Unendlichkeit darstellbar machen zu können. Vielmehr kann `Yves le Monochrome` durch die Patentierung von I.K.B. diese Farbe untrennbar mit sich selbst verbinden. Neben den monochromen Bildern, in denen neben I.K.B. die Farben Rot und Gold vorherrschen, gibt es weitere feste Größen im Werk von Yves Klein.Neben den Anthropometrien, zumeist Abdrücken nackter Frauenkörper, sind sicherlich die Schwammskulpturen die eindrucksvollste und bekannteste Werkgruppe im ?uvre des Künstlers. Dabei handelt es sich um singulär aufgefasste, auf Metallstelen präsentierte, monochrome Schwämme. Die Schwammskulpturen stimulieren das ästhetische Empfinden des Betrachters auf mehreren Ebenen. Zunächst ist das Farberlebnis von höchster Intensität, denn hunderte feiner Poren des Schwammes vergrößern die Farbfläche trotz der auf den ersten Blick kleinen Gesamterscheinung. Kunsttheoretisch verortbar sind die Schwammskulpturen im Umkreis des Nouveau Réalisme, der durch eine Einbeziehung von Alltagsgegenständen in die Kunstwerke visuellen Ausdruck findet. Yves Klein gehört 1960 neben Arman, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely und anderen zu den Gründungsmitgliedern dieser `Nouveaux Réalistes`. Bei Klein sind es daher die wundervollen Schwämme, die vom Gebrauchsgegenstand zum Kunstobjekt werden.Im August 1962 kommt das erste Kind von Yves Klein und seiner Frau Rotraut Uecker, Schwester des Künstlers Günther Uecker, auf die Welt. Tragischerweise erlebt Yves Klein die Geburt seines Sohnes nicht mehr, denn der Künstler stirbt am 6. Juni desselben Jahres infolge mehrerer Herzanfälle.
