Martin Brothers, a stoneware model in the form of a dog, circa 1900, modelled seated wearing a ruff collar, allover incised detailing, glazed with dark spots against a sand coloured ground, the collar in white, mounted on a turned ebonised plinth base, the underside of the plinth base incised 'R.W. Martin & Bros, London, Southall', 11.5cm high, 13cm inc. plinth base. This example of Martin ware is similar in design and size to that seen in Malcolm Haslam's 'The Martin Brothers Potters', Dennis Publications, 1978, fig 109, p 84 where it is referred to as a Toby. Unlike other examples of modelled dogs that have appeared to market in recent years, this particular dog has the head and body fused together, rather than being a true jar and cover. The substance used to hold both parts together is a white composite material similar to that seen used to stabilise significant firing cracks or flaws on larger Martin models. As to whether it is contemporary is indeterminable. Furthermore, the means of marking this example is also highly unusual. The underside of the ebonised plinth is inset with a plaster-like material which carries the incised markings. The dog is seemingly glued to the plinth and has not been inspected for any incised markings directly into the stoneware, and due to the fused head-to-body, a marking to the internal collar is also not possible to confirm.
Martin Brothers, a stoneware jar and cover in the form of a bird, dated 31st March 1914, the detailed feathers glazed in tones of green, blue and buff, mounted on an ebonised wooden plinth, incised to internal head collar and base 'R.W Martin & Bros, London, Southall, 31.3.1914', 12.5cm high, 14.5cm high inc. base. The head of this Wally bird is detachable, although it has a cork wedged internally which in turn is attached to a piece of string preventing the head from coming free entirely. Presumably acting as a primitive safety mechanism when being handled.

Lipszyc', 43cm high.
