WON BY CPL A J STEWART, on granite plinth, hallmarked Birmingham 1930, two contemporary studio photographs of Col Stewart, press cuttings and a relevant copy of the Gatooma Mail newspaper, February 12 1942 MC: London Gazette, 26 December 1941, p7336. Captain Alexander James ["Jock"] Stewart led the spearhead of the attack on the Marda Pass. The recommendation of the MC reads: "During the action on 24 Feb 1941 at VITTORIA D`AFRICA when his Company came under intense Machine Gun fire by bold leadership and skilful handling he succeeded in capturing the position with the minimum number of casualties. On 21 Mar 1941, in the action for the MARDA PASS, and although wounded himself established them in a strong position before being evacuated as a casualty, thus setting a fine example to his men.
