A William IV/early Victorian rosewood crossbanded mahogany longcase clock, 36cm arched painted dial inscribed James Brindley, Newcastle, Roman numerals, rolling moon phase to arch, subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, 8-day movement striking on a bell, the case with lofty swan neck pediment, Gothic triple lancet door to waist flanked by turned pillars, plinth base, 231cm high, c.1840James Brindley of Newcastle-under-Lyme was born in 1804 and apprenticed to John Nickerson of Newcastle 1819-1826, and set up shop in Ironmarket, Newcastle shortly afterwards, working until 1860. He employed seve men in 1851, and used neighbouring craftsman John Broomhall as his cabinet maker (and in all probability the maker of this case). He was succeeded by his son John Beavis Brindley.working 1830-1850 Condition Report: Generally good.
A George III oak and mahogany longcase clock, 30.5cm arched painted dial inscribed George Kiddle, Sherborne, Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, twin winding holes, 8-day movement striking on a bell, the case with swan neck pediment, rectangular door to waist, plinth base, 222cm high, c.1820George Kiddle was born at Sherborne, Dorset, was apprenticed 1823-1830, when he set up in business there, marrying Mary Tuffin the following year. In 1855 he moved to Chelmsford, Essex, and died at Shoreditch 3/5/1871.
