Gerhard Altenbourg. (1926 Rödichen/Schnepfenthal - 1989 Meißen). Vogel. 1974. Iron on plinth. Plaque on the copper underside, there with incised signature, dating, numbering and the Altenbourg stamp. - Slightly rubbed in places, plinth with a few nicks at the edge on the reverse. Overall good. Splendid, figuratively balanced cast with differentiated patina. - One of only 4 copies. - Provenance: Private property, East Germany. - Handcrafted by Ulrich Schlegel. - Executed in one piece after the figure composed of several parts from 1957. - Altenburg's sculptural work is characterized by complex structures, and our work is an illustrative example of this: The vegetal, animalistic and anthropomorphic merge fluidly and seemingly effortlessly. Despite its iron materiality, the figure is delicate, graceful and fragile. Altenbourg repeatedly paid tribute to the figure of the bird, choosing it as the subject of his artistic exploration for his graphic and drawing work.
