The poem tells the story of Ivan Mazeppa, a page at the Court of King John II Casimir Vasa. The young Mazeppa has an affair with the Countess Theresa who was married to a much older Count. As a punishment Ivan Mazeppa was banished from court tied to a horse. A COLLECTOR'S CABINET OF BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHSWith six glazed top drawers, two bearing old labels, raised on a moulded plinth base, together with two pairs of late 18th / early 19th century steel strongbox keys and a further two examples, and two white metal crests for the Cookson family, the collector's cabinet: 37cm wide, 22.5cm deep, 41.5cm high (14 1/2in wide, 8 1/2in deep, 16in high) (9)Footnotes:The heraldic achievement is that of Isaac COOKSON (1776-1851) and his wife Jane COOK (1784-1869), who from 1835 were of Meldon Park Hall and Estate, Northumberland. The hall having been built for them in the period 1832-5. They were in 1805 married at Newcastle upon Tyne. Isaac COOKSON (1776-1851) was born at Newcastle upon Tyne, the third son of Isaac COOKSON (1745-1831) of Newcastle upon Tyne by Margaret WILKINSON (1749-1801). He was a merchant and in 1809 the Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne. Jane COOK (1784-1869) was the daughter and heir of Revd. Joseph COOK (1759-1844) vicar of Shilbottle and of Newton Hall, Northumberland by Sarah BROWN formerly of Broomhill.
