An early 20th century Chinese spinach jade coloured baluster urn and cover on hardwood plinth. With flat scrolling handles formed as a pair of phoenix with further bird carving to the cover and body, 37cm. No chips or cracks. Free from any breaks and pieces re-glued.

A CARVING MADE FROM WOOD RECOVERED FROM H.M. SUBMARINE HOLLAND I carved by Colin Edwards in the form of an 'old salt' seated on a barrel, secured to a plinth, with a label to the underside, overall -- 13in. (33cm.) high; together with a letter from H.M. Naval Base, Gosport confirming provenance (2)Footnote: The Royal Navy's first submarine was built in great secrecy in 1901-2 by Vickers, Barrow to designs by Fenian sympathiser, John Holland. Known as H.M.S. Holland I, apart from an abortive attack on the Russian fleet panicked into sinking a number of trawlers in the North Sea in 1904, she had no active career. Considered so obsolete by 1913, she was sold to the breakers (Wards) intact, but sank without loss of life en route. Discovered in 1981, she was raised and now makes an important exhibit at the Naval Museum, Gosport. During conservation, a small amount of timber was removed.

Tang Dynasty, 618-906 AD. A ceramic figure formed as a victorious guardian standing on the back of a struggling grotesque figure on an integral hollow plinth; the guard's arms and fists indicate a weapon-carrying stance, and he wears a helmet and armour plating which terminates with dragon-heads at the arms; the terrified figure beneath him is an animal-human hybrid, with large ears, protrusions on the forehead and animal's paws; red, black, green and blue painted pigmentation survives. See Prodan, M., The Art of The Tang Potter, Thames & Hudson, 1960, fig.40, for a comparable example and discussion. 29.6 kg, 1.04m (41"). From the estate of an important deceased Japanese art collector; the collection formed 1960-2010; accompanied by a positive thermoluminescence report no.41CM110520 issued by Laboratory Kotalla; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no.10170-166758. A tiered carved sandstone plinth with two lions lying side by side, tails to the side, hind legs tucked beneath them, heads resting on outstretched forelegs extending over the plinth edge; details on paws, faces, heads and manes are well-rendered. 45.5 kg, 52cm (20 1/2"). Property of a West London businessman, his collection having been formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Fine condition.

Condition Report The top/cornice lifts off, the glazed doors split into two sections, the lower section stays as one. One glass panel is missing, there is replacement moulding all over. Needs a polish/wax. In overall tatty condition, will look good with restoration.
