A JAPANESE NAGASAKI STYLE LACQUER CUTLERY BOX EDO PERIOD, C.1800 Formed as an urn with a rising cover revealing tiered compartments for knives, decorated to the exterior with vertical panels in mother of pearl and gold, depicting ho-ho birds, urns and flower sprays, the square plinth raised on four bracket feet, 76cm. Provenance: from a deceased estate, Hampshire. Cf. O Impey and C Jörg, Japanese Export Lacquer 1580-1850, pp.326-328 n.637, for a closely related knife urn at the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, acquired by Captain Samuel Gardner Derby in 1801. Gardner Derby was Captain of the Margaret of Salem and traded in Nagasaki under charter from the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie), the Dutch East India Company.
λ THREE JAPANESE IVORY NETSUKE MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY One carved as a large boar sleeping on a bed of autumnal leaves, with long grasses and ears of wheat issuing from rockwork beside it, some details inlaid, signed Kaigyoku Masatsugu after the famous model by Kaigyokusai Masatsugu (1813-1892); another depicting a voluptuous Okame wearing loose robes revealing her bosom and holding a circular fan, inscribed Mitsuhiro; the third Handaka Sonja holding an alms bowl from which a large dragon emerges, signed Hidemasa; together with a Chinese uncut seal carved as a lion dog on a tall plinth, with long inscriptions to the sides, 5.6cm max. An early 19th Century Chamberlain Worcester garniture, circa 1820 painted with topographical scenes comprising central urn and cover supported by a pair of two handled cup and covers. The urn with cobalt blue reserves with floral rosette border to collar and back mid section, twin gilt dolphin handles with shell terminals, faux marbled square plinth, all heighted with gilt border, the centre painting depicts HAREWOOD HOUSE within landscape, the painting set within gilt framed incised with scrolls and title, the cover with gilt pineapple finial. Group of Figures, in silver, representing King John signing Magna Carta lent by J. D'Aguilar Samuda Esq., Note:Joseph D'Aguilar Samuda (1813 -1885) was a civil engineer and politician. Born in London, he studied engineering with his brother Jacob, they subsequently set up Samuda Brothers which principally built marine engines between 1832-1842. From 1843 Samuda Bros (Jacob died in 1844) entered into ship-building and the firm was continuously engaged in constructing iron steamships for the Royal Navy, merchant marine, passenger and mail services as well as private commissions. In 1860 Joseph helped to establish the Institute of Naval Architects, of which he was the first treasurer and subsequently a vice-president and in 1862 he became a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.In 1841 Joseph published A Treatise on the Adaptation of Atmospheric Pressure to the Purposes of Locomotion on Railways. He patented the scheme and as a result his firm was engaged in putting into practice between the yeas 1842 -1848. They laid down and worked on experimental lines most notably between London Bridge and Epsom (Croydon line), Dalkey (Co Dublin) and Paris however, once consistent problems became apparent the atmospheric method of propulsion was abandoned and the equipment sold.Politically he was a member of the Metropolitan Board of Works from 1860 to 1865, entering Parliament as the Liberal MP for Tavistock. He sat for Tavistock until 1868, when he was returned for the Tower Hamlets, which he represented until 1880. Then he lost his seat owing to his support for Benjamin Disraeli's foreign policy. While in the House he spoke with authority on all matters connected with his profession and his speeches are described as "treasure-houses of technical and political knowledge." He was one of the original officers of the 2nd Tower Hamlets Rifle Volunteer Corps/ 4th (City of London) Battalion in 1861 he was commissioned as a captain.
