Large Japanese lacquered and giltwood figure of Amida Buddha, Edo period, probably 18th Century, modelled in standing pose with central cabochon to curled hair, right hand raised in blessing, in gilt robes standing upon a lotus base and stepped domed plinth, 61.5cm high Provenance: Deceased estate, Clifton, Bristol. Condition: Small flake to face beside mouth. Wear to gilding especially of shoulders and high points of drapery. Vacant slot behind figure. Chrysanthemum base is missing some petals to rear (beneath vacant slot) plus a few further petal losses to front. Stepped circular base has general gilt rubbing, minor cracks and losses commensurate with age. Minor cracking to left hand - **General condition consistent with age

Ethnographica - Rare Marquesas Islands carved hardwood stilt step or tapuva'e, late 18th or early 19th Century, probably iron wood (casuarina equisetifolia), finely stone-and/or shell-carved with a traditional tiki figure having elaborate geometrically-incised curved headdress, large high eyebrows over almondine eyes with scroll terminals, scarification or tattoo marks to jawline, hands placed upon stomach, squatting upon incised knees, 24cm high (truncated), on later oval plinth, 25.5cm high overall. Provenance - Local private vendor Condition: Fine patina and quality of carving. Damage - Two minor pin holes to headdress, plus a few dints to highpoints of same. Old splits and edge scuffs/losses to rear of stilt as per images. Left nipple missing (very old loss). Similar old losses to kneecaps. Missing tapering section beneath feet of tiki (probably around 3 inches), front edge beneath knees is a lighter colour. Screwed into a later base

Typical cracking and some flake losses to gesso including losses to bead work surrounding base surmount, flaking to plinth beneath urn, some typical losses and cracking to foliate scroll work, further bead work losses and tight crack to frame etc. a later wooden backing strip to rear supports the structure. Mitchell, Glasgow, having an 11-inch Roman dial with subsidiary seconds and calendar dials, inscribed as above, the knopped four-pillar movement striking on a bell, the case with stepped architectural top over canted corners to the hood and trunk, framing crossbanded trunk door on panelled base and stepped plinth, 180cm high Condition: General crazing to dial, some fading to inscription and reblacking of subsidiary dials. Movement has been cleaned, appears sound but untested and sold as seen. Minor packing beneath seat board to each side. Case in generally good condition except for veneer losses to edges of front panel of base, otherwise good colour and figure - **General condition consistent with age

They enjoyed a dominance almost comparable to that achieved by Gillows in Lancashire.

Other Notes: John Wise senior recorded as a freeman in 1646, apparently living in Warwick 1653-68, then in London thereafter. One of his apprentices (a son) was also called John, a freeman from 1679. He was dead by April 1693. Longcase clocks are difficult to distinguish between father and son. recent support limb fitted to top of backboard for supporting raised hood. ConditionApparently not month going.  Going train winding on left side barrel anti clockwise. Recent support limb fitted to top of backboard for supporting raised hood.  Please see extra photos.  Case may be later  (poss 19th century); it has had restorations amd repolishing. Currently running.  Private owner downsizing.

Henry Hindley, York, a George III mahogany 'Chinese Chippendale' longcase clock, the case very similar to a design in Chippendale's Director, the pagoda top hood with 12inch arched signed silvered one-piece dial, 4 pillar movement, the tapering trunk with full length door upon a stepped moulded front plinth, 271cm high Provenance: Mawley Hall, Shropshire Literature: The case design published as plate CXXXVI in the 1754 and 1755 editions of Chippendale's Director. Henry Hindley (1701-1771), a fine and ingenious clockmaker, also created the world’s first telescope powered by a precision clock movement, enabling the telescope to remain fixed on its subject without constant adjustment because of the earth’s rotation (Collection Science Museum, London).ConditionReluctant to keep ticking.  Strikes correctly when hands are advanced.  One piece hood.

A carved pine pier table, in George II style, 19th century, in the manner of Francis Brodie, the verde antico marble top above the fluted frieze interspersed with paterae terminals, the support carved in the form of an eagle perched on a rocky outcrop, on a plinth base with an acanthus carved border, 87.5cm high, 78cm wide, 49.5cm deep Tables with eagle supports such as this example are commonly described as 'in the manner of William Kent. Kent's design was used as tail-piece in Pope's edition of Homer's Odyssey, which was published 1725/6, and shows two fighting eagles with out-spread wings standing on a large pier table with a Greek-key ornamented frame above a solid shaped stand ornamented with Bacchic masks and garlands. An interesting trade card, dated 1739, for Francis Brodie, the Edinburgh cabinetmaker, illustrates an interior with a group of furniture, including a related console table with an eagle support.
