A LARGE PAIR OF CARVED MARBLE 'MEDICI LIONS' IN THE 'GRAND TOUR' MANNER, 20TH CENTURY Swept plinth bases and further modern white cream wood pedestals the lions 97cm wide, 92cm high including plinth bases, 193.5cm high overall Provenance: Barnwell Manor, Northamptonshire. Windsor House Antiques. Acquired from Freemans Philadelphia, 6th October 2000 lot 1077 $24,000. Originally from the estate of Loice and the late Reverend Wilbar Gouker. From their home Oaks Cloister, Philadelphia- designed and furnished by the architect Joseph Miller Hudson. The lions were placed at the foot of the stairs and Hudson is said to have acquired them on one of his trips to Florence. Please note, the provenance for this lot has been updated and expanded. Please see our website for the full updated details. The original ancient marble lion on which these are based was first recorded by Flaminio Vacca in 1594, by which time it had been acquired by Grand Duke Ferdinand for the Villa Medici in Rome. Vacca carved a companion lion out of a giant marble capital found behind the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the original and companion pair were then placed in the loggia of the Villa Medici before being moved in 1797 to the entrance of the loggia dei Lanzi in Florence.Condition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. There has been discussion as to the exact nature of the material the lions are carved from. Surfaces are dirty with some dirt and scuff marks but would suggest that they have been heavily cleaned/polished within the last 30-40 years and original surface patina lost rendering the appearance to more like calcite alabaster than marble. Certainly, although it has scratches to the surface- testing it with a fingernail does not seem to produce a fine soft residue and they 'ring' well to a knock. The slight chips to the surface reveal a 'sugar' twinkle to the underlying structure but light penetrates the surface much more than would expect from a variegated marble. The plinth however is a harder denser marble- less translucent and with brighter sparkling visible to the chipped sections.Visible uneven smoothing marks visible to underside of legs and interior of mouths. Some natural flaws and wear including scratches and marks- conchoidal mark to left cheek of one lion. Under UV there is indication of some restoration to this point- and to some spots on other lion's face. The edges are also showing signs of being tidied up and both tails are slightly flat in colour- 1 with a flaw visible at the base. Base edges and corners with numerous areas of knocks and loss- additionally some more scuffs and knocks to pedestals.
