A South Netherlandish late Gothic oak group of ‘The Deposition’, probably Brussels, depicting the saints Anne, John, Mary and Mary Magdalen, on a plinth, 30cm high, circa 1490-1500 (losses). This Deposition group formed part of an altar piece below the figure of Christ being lowered from the cross. In northern Europe the altarpiece was the most important type of sculpture in wood. A James I joined oak court cup-board or buffet, early 17th century, with gadrooned and stylised leaf carving, the upper and central tiers with a long drawer, with inset strapwork design to the top of the central tier, with gadrooned and leaf carved cup and cover supports and a plinth base, 120cm high, 116cm wide, 43cm deep (the lower stage of a later date). A mid-16th century joined oak standing cupboard, of canted rectangular form, the shaped moulded top above a central panelled door carved in relief with the head of a bearded man within a laurel wreath and ribbon scrolled cartouche, flanked by panels decorated with urns, caryatids, a shield-shaped cartouche and foliate scrolls, with pendant finials to the apron, above an open boarded undertier with a panelled back, flanked by baluster turned supports, on panelled plinth, the right side panel bears the date ‘1548’, 126cm high, 133cm wide, 57cm deep (replacement plinth, back panel and portrait head, restored).
