SMITH Watch-maker', the trunk and panelled base with chamfered corners, 226.5cm high (faded decoration to dial, replacement plinth). See Britten's Old Clocks and Watches and Their Makers, reprinted 1990, where James Smith is noted by Cecil Clutton to have worked as a clockmaker in Edinburgh from 1790-1806. The label to this clock shows that he was definitely active there in 1789.
