AN EARLY 19TH CENTURY MAHOGANY CONSOLE TABLE, IN THE MANNER OF WILLIAM KENT, having a later oblong top over a frieze, centred by a coiled serpent, flanked by egg and dart moulded panels, over a laurel border, extending to each side, supported on a finely carved eagle with outspread wings, standing on a rocky base, from an oblong plinth with gadrooned border, 94cm high, 150cm wide, 64cm deep. A coiled serpent forms the apex of the Cavendish family crest (Dukes of Devonshire) and this table may have a link to the family, whose London home was designed by Kent in the 18th century, however no further evidence has come to light. A Chinese unglazed pottery figure of a horse, on a rectangular plinth, 25cm high, Tang dynasty (AD 618-907), The above dating has been confirmed by thermoluminescent test at Research for Archaeology and the History of Art, Oxford University, sample number 381e11, obtained 15th June 1983.
