11th-12th century, gilt-bronze gargoyle/dragon, 9.5cm x 2cm, haunched on its two legs, wings closed at the side with the tail wrapped under the body; the long neck is marked with chevron grooves indicating the spine, while the head is turned to the side; globular raised eyes and an open mouth with the tongue protruding; seated on a multi-stepped plinth with a shaft below for attachment. Fine with around 30% of gilding remaining £300-£400 --- Provenance: found near York, c. 2012 Gargoyles are said to ward off evil spirits. St Romanus of Rouen saved France from a dragon named La Gargouille that rose out of the river Seine.
