Section of Wreckage from German Zeppelin Shot Down in Salonika on 5th May 1916, interesting section of the aluminium struts which has been mounted onto a wooden plinth with a alloy figure of a Lion mounted within which holds a shield which is engraved “ZEPPELIN L53 BROUGHT DOWN BY NAVAL GUNFIRE AT SALONICA MAY 5TH 1916”. One section of strut has a backing plate added to strengthen. Measures 29 x 23cms approximately. Interesting to note that L53 was actually the last Zeppelin to be destroyed during the war when it was shot down on 11th August 1918, also not the incorrect spelling on the engraving of Salonika, typical of period souvenirs to be engraved with incorrect information and spellings. The IWM has film taken at the time of the crashed zeppelin which was brought down on the 5th May 1916 in Salonika and shows French, British and Serbian troops taking souvenirs from the wreckage. Zeppelin LZ 55 (LZ-85) was the ship which was hit by fire from HMS Agamemnon on 5th May 1916, the airship came down in the Vardar Marshes and 12 crew members were captured.
