Anschließend lebte er für zwei Jahre in Paris. Zunächst betätigte er sich vorwiegend als Keramiker, u.a. für die Manufaktur Mutz in Altona. Eine Russlandreise 1906 beeinflußte ihn nachhaltig; er stellte Skulpturen des russischen Volkslebens erstmals 1907 bei der Berliner Secession aus. Plinthenrand Gießerstempel 'GUSS BARTH RINTELN', num. Ex. '10/10'. H. 17,8 cm, 27 x 6,7 cm. - Gerhard Marcks zählt neben Lehmbruck u. Barlach zu den bedeutendensten deutschen Bildhauern der Gegenwart. Ab 1907 teilte er sich ein Atelier mit R. Scheibe, erste autodidaktische Tierplastiken nach Studien im Zoologischen Garten von Berlin zeigen die Nähe zum Oeuvre des Tierbildhauers A. Gaul, der ihn als Modelleur an die Schwarzburger Werkstätten vermittelte. 1918 wurde er durch B. Paul an die Berliner Kunstgewerbeschule berufen, bevor W. Gropius ihn 1919 als Leiter der Bauhaus-Töpferei nach Weimar abwarb. Dort traf er 1921 L. Feininger, der ihn zur Beschäftigung mit dem Holzschnitt anregte. 1928 erhielt er den Villa-Romana-Preis u. übernahm die Leitung der Kunstgewerbeschule Burg Giebichenstein in Halle. 1933 von den Nazis aus dem Lehramt entlassen, verbrachte er die Jahre des inneren Exils in Ahrenshoop. Ab 1945 unterrichtete er an der Landeskunstschule Hamburg, 1950 übersiedelte er nach Köln. Marcks schuf zahlreiche Skulpturen für den öffentlichen Raum. Er thematisierte als Bildhauer wie als Zeichner den Menschen, dabei wurde die archaische Kunst Ausgangspunkt für eine beseelte, in sich ruhende Kunstform. Bereits mit 16 Jahren begann er ein Studium an der Wiener Akademie, u.a. bei A. Gütersloh, und schon 1949 hatte er seine erste Einzelausstellung in Paris, wo er sich auch niederließ. 1962 kehrte er nach Wien zurück, zehn Jahre später erwarb er die Otto-Wagner-Villa, die heute das Ernst-Fuchs-Museum beherbergt. Bronze, patiniert und tlw. goldfarben gefasst, signiert, nummeriert: Ernst Fuchs, 'IWC International Watch Co. Schaffhausen', 'Venturi Arte', num. 21/789. Im Sockel befindliches Unruhwerk mit Halb- und Stundenschlag auf Glocken. Drehlünette für 24 Std., darauf Indizes und röm. Ziffern mit Zeiger, seitlich drei Aufzuglöcher für die Zeiteinstellung, Schlüsselaufzug. Darstellung des Januskopfes von Tag- und Nachtansicht mit Drehmechanismus auf sechseckiger Marmorsäule (kl. Besch.). Mit 2 Schlüsseln. Säule H. 90,5 cm, Uhr H. 67,5 cm. - Maler, Graphiker, Bildhauer und Architekt, einer der Hauptvertreter des Phantastischen Realismus. Bereits mit 16 Jahren begann er ein Studium an der Wiener Akademie, u.a. bei A.
