2nd-3rd century AD. A carved schist Atlant figurine, winged and nude, seated with right hand on the knee and left hand on the thigh; mounted on a custom-made stand. See Stanco, L. Greek Gods in the East: Hellenistic Iconographic Schemes in Central Asia, Prague, 2012; Nagar, S. Gandharan Sculpture: A Catalogue of the Collection in the Museum of Art and Archaeology, University of Missouri-Columbia, 1981. 5 kg, 23cm including stand (9"). Private collection, North London; acquired in the early 1980s. Also known as Bharavahaka, meaning that which carries, these are a class of Hindu and Buddhist nature deity known as a Yaksha that has incorporated Graeco-Roman ideas of Atlas. As a decorative element in Gandharan Buddhist sculpture they are shown as multiple figures that ran in a narrow band below the relief panels around the four faces of a stupa plinth. The local nature deities take on a protective, as well as supportive role, for Buddhist iconography and ideology. The images of the Atlant figures always shows them in Greaco-Roman style and this is an excellent example of the eastern Hellenistic art that flourished in Central Asia. Fine condition.

Lot 1361

2nd-4th century AD.  A carved schist panel with the Buddha sat on a plinth under the Bodhi tree; to his left a group of five devotees with hands in prayer; to his right another devotee at the top corner and below, the girl Sujata with offering bowl; next to her is Herakles with club on shoulder, the whole scene is framed within an architectural niche with Corinthian column on which is a guardian figure; mounted on a custom-made stand. 80kg, 60cm x 57cm including stand Fine condition. ProvenanceProperty of a London gentleman; acquired before 1980. FootnotesThe panel depicts the Buddha after gaining enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, Northern India. The figure of Sujata relates to the time when the Buddha gave up ascetic practices and accepted a bowl of food from her to break his fast. The figure of Herakles, a common attendant to the Buddha in Gandharan sculpture, and the Corinthian column, indicate the strong Graeco-Indian influences on the art of the region at this time.

When the child was baptised, he had to face the shame of this being announced in church before every member of his family and the rest of the parish. His early mistake caused him to turn to religion and for a while he turned to Quakerism. The inscription on this clock appears to have been his favourite verse.
