Presentation Bronze Military Figure of a Swedish Life Guard by Alfred Ohlson (1868-1940), Presented to a Swedish Officer who was Killed in Action During the Finish Civil War in 1918, fine example of a bronze figure of a officer from the Swedish Life Guards in full ceremonial uniform with parade busby and sword in hand. Mounted onto a polished marble plinth stand with silver plaque having engraved presentation, “MINNESGAFVA FRAN KUNGL GOTA LIFGARDES OFFICERSKAR TILL P. G. GLIMSTEDT 1888-1916”. The bronze is signed to the rear of the base “Alfred Ohlson” and has foundry mark for J G Hallberg. Figure stands 54 ½ cms including the base. We believe that the statue was presented by officers of the Swedish Life Guard regiment to Peter (Per) Gustav Glimstedt who was born in Stockholm in 1871. He was an officer in the Gota Life Guards. He served with the unit in the Congo between 1894-1898. He also served as an instructor to the Persian Gendarmerie. In February 1918 he went to Finland and served as an officer during the civil war, he was the first Swedish volunteer officer to be killed during the Finish Civil War on 28th February 1918.
Statue of German Military & Political Leader Otto von Bismarck, the figure was produced after his death in 1898, shows the leader in full military uniform of an Imperial Prussian Cuirassier. Inscription to the plinth he is seen leaning on “WIR DEUTSCHE FURCHTEN GOTT SONST NICHTS IN DER WELT”, reverse has his date of his life “1815-1898”. The statue appears to be made from a cast brass with a artist mark under the base.
Artillery Shell Head from the Battle of Pirot During the Servo-Bulgarian War 1885 Presented to H.R.H Prince Henry of Battenburg, the very heavy projectile shell head is loose on a marble square plinth which has a finely engraved silver plaque applied, “SERVO-BULGARIAN WAR 1885 SHELL FROM PIROT – PRESENTED TO H.R.H Prince Henry of Battenburg KG – BY THE AMBULANCE STAFF OF THE NATIONAL AID SOCIETY”. Some wear to the base and rusting to the shell top but generally a interesting item from a little known European war. Prince Henry of Battenburg was a descendent of the Grand Ducal House of Hesse, he became a member of the British Royal Family when he married Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter Princess Beatrice. In his early life, he served in various Imperial German military regiments, including the Garde du Corps. He was made a honorary colonel of the 1st Infantry regiment of Bulgaria, where his brother was Prince of the nation. Queen Victoria would only agree to his marriage of her daughter, if the couple stayed in the UK and became members of the British Royal Family. The couple did this and were married on the Isle of Wight. On 22nd August 1885 he was made Honorary Colonel of the 5th (Isle of Wight, Princess Beatrice’s) Volunteer Battalion Hampshire Regiment. In 1889 he was appointed Governor of Carisbrook Castle on the Isle of Wight and Captain General-Governor of the Island. In November 1895, he persuaded Queen Victoria to let him go to Africa to fight in the Ashanti War, this was granted. He contracted Malaria when the expedition reached Prahsu, 30 miles from Kumasi. He died on board the cruiser HMS Blonde stationed off the coast of Sierra Leone. His body was brought back to the UK and his funeral service took place at St Mildred’s church, Whippingham on the Isle of Wight. His body was interned in what is now to be known as Battenburg Chapel. On her death in 1945, his wife Princess Beatrice’s remains were also placed in the chapel. The battle of Pirot during the Servo-Bulgarian war was won by the Bulgarian forces and ended the war between the two nations, resulting in the signing of the treaty of Bucharest.
