A two handled silver presentation trophy, Barker Brothers, Chester 1924, foliate scroll capped handles and with inscription for the Whitehaven Conservative and Constitutional Club "Helder cup", presented by Mr L T Helder for billiard competition 1925, on a square ebonised plinth with white metal plaques inscribed with the recipients and date, cup 402.7 grams, height excluding base 25 cm.
A Victorian opalescent glass oil lamp, 19th century, with gilt metal mounts, the stem with a slender baluster to the base and supported on an embossed brass Rococo scroll and floral domed foot. Height 45 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The lamp base is structurally sound. The base is very tarnished and dirty but not damaged. The plaster of Paris that fills the underside is visible and this may well have had a further plinth. The glass column is in good order. The top pierced brass section has had some repair. There is a hole at the top into which a font would fit but this is not threaded.
An Italian hardwood table top cabinet, 18th century, the exterior with ivory strung panels with two cupboard doors opening to reveal an interior of drawers with ivory and ebony inlaid decoration against a wavy moulded border, the interior doors similarly decorated, the central drawer housing a secret drawer to the rear, all upon a shaped plinth with brass bracket feet, all upon a contemporary stand but with later top, the cabinet including feet 37 cm wide, 28 cm high and 24 cm deep, the stand 60 cm high and 39.5 cm wide (see illustration).
A large spelter mantle clock, with horse and knight pediment and all raised on a wooden base, clock height only 47 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The movement winds on both trains. It strikes when advanced. It is also ticking away. We have the pendulum. The dial is in good order with no hairline cracks. The silvering to the horse is reasonable and the gilding to the main body is reasonably good but very dusty. The only major issue with the case is that both rear legs are buckled and damaged and where they join the sides and back of the case there have been soldered repairs which are not effective. The back left rear leg is loose and the rear of the case is split away from the side of the case. The right hand rear foot is simply buckled and not loose. We do not have a key. Base width 39 cm, clock width 34 cm (max), clock height excluding plinth 46 cm, including plinth 52 cm, depth of base (max) 21 cm.
A Victorian plum pudding mahogany wardrobe, with detachable moulded cornice, four arched panelled doors enclosing hanging space and drawers. Width 240 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Height 216 cm, depth at cornice 65 cm, depth at sides 58 cm. The centre section has five trays to the upper half and two short and two long drawers beneath. The right hand side is fitted with four shelves and a fall front compartment beneath. The left hand side is full hanging space. The wardrobe is in generally good order. The cornice has some minor nibbles to the top edge but no significant losses. The left hand side is in good order. The right hand side has a fracture to the timber right at the wall. There is no timber loss just a minor split. The plinth base is in generally good condition with only minor surface marks and scuffs. None of the doors are warped. There are no splits to the doors and only minor blemishes. The right hand door is missing its lock escutcheon. All interior trays, drawers and shelves are present and there is nothing missing. The left hand full length wardrobe has a later clothes rail fitted. The backboards are original and in good order.
A Victorian Aesthetic Movement ebonised and amboyna wood Davenport desk, with cupboard to one side enclosing four drawers and all raised on bun feet with castors. Width 56 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The Davenport is in original unrestored condition. It is generally a little dirty and dusty but has no significant structural issues. The brass gallery is intact. The top of the stationery cabinet is flat with slight stress fractures to the veneers. The hinges are original and the interior is complete. There are no inkwells. The lock is present but we do not have the key. The slope front is in generally good order and not warped. The ebonised finish is rubbed around the edge moulding. The tooled leather writing surface has a small loss to the bottom left hand corner. The left hand side is in generally good condition with only minor stress fractures to the ebony veneers. The same can be said of the front panel. The right hand door is in good condition and all interior drawers are present and slide well. The rear of the Davenport is a little dry and may have been in the sun. There are some small sections of boxwood stringing missing beneath the stationery compartment and the bottom panel has a section to the top which is damaged. The plinth base has minor nibbles and one more significant loss to the rear. All feet are original as are the castors. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.
A Victorian mahogany partners desk, with tooled leather writing surface, rounded corners and three frieze drawers to either side and three drawers to either side of each pedestal, with Wellington chest type action and plinth base beneath. Width 139 cm, depth 108 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The leather writing surface is marked and scratched in places and has small losses to the leather on one side. The crossbanded edge surround is in good order. The applied moulded edge is all present but does have numerous vertical stress fractures and is slightly springing in places. All drawer fronts have veneer nibbles particularly to the edges and corners. All knob handles are present. The sides of the top are in good condition. The pedestal bases have full height vertical cracks to either side caused by shrinkage. The interior sides are in better condition (they could be swapped over). Three of the twelve drawers have full width stress fractures. The Wellington chest action operates on all pedestals. We have no keys. The plinth base has the usual scuffs and marks. This is basically a good desk but does require some restoration.
An Edwardian walnut open bookcase, with moulded edge above a series of open shelves flanked by flat pilasters and raised on bracket feet. Width 107 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The top is flat and not warped. It is generally in very good order with only very minor surface polish scratches and the odd minor mark. The right hand side has a small scuff to the bottom right hand rear corner and other minor marks. The left hand side is in very good order with no condition issues. The bracket feet and plinth are in good order and the backboards are original. The shelf surfaces have the usual marks and scuffs that one would expect from a piece of this age.
A Victorian walnut Wellington chest, with seven drawers with wooden knob handles and raised on a plinth base. Width 48.5 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The chest is in generally good order. The top has two stress fractures to the veneers. One runs for approx 11 cm the other for around 30 cm. The Wellington chest action operates as it should. All drawers are in generally good order with only minor veneer nibbles and small repairs to some corners which is usual. The right hand side has several stress fractures to the veneers as does the left. The plinth base is in good condition all round. We can see no evidence of any woodworm. The backboards are original and there is a label to the rear Hanford Brother's House Furnishers, Ryde.
