Story sailed to Pennsylvania in 1698 and at the request of his friend William Penn, stayed for the next sixteen years. He was chosen as the first Recorder of Philadelphia in 1701, he was a member of the Council of State, keeper of the Great Seal, Master of the Roles, and in 1706 was elected mayor of Philadelphia. Temple Bar A London Magazine for Town and Country Readers, vols 1-4, 6-99 & 101-133, 1861-1906, lacks only vols. 5 & 100, vols. 1-39 bound in publisher's orig. blind-stamped cloth gilt, a little rubbed, remainder bound in stout library buckram or half morocco (some a little worn), all 8vo. This monthly magazine was started by business-publisher John Maxwell, in the light of the success of the Cornhill Magazine. The first editor was George Augustus Sala (vols. 1-9, December 1860-November 1863), followed by Edmund Yates (vols. 10-21, December 1863-September 1867), then George Bentley, Richard Bentley and Gertrude Townshend Mayer. The magazine contains first appearances of novels by Mary Elizabeth Braddon and Wilkie Collins, among many others. (132)

Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911), a cousin of Charles Darwin, was one of the first men to realise that finger-prints remain constant from childhood to death. Although this work heralded the dawn of a new era in crime detection, it was not until 1901 that a finger-print bureau was established by Scotland Yard. (1)
