Specimens of Native Cloth from the South Sea Islands, one volume, containing 39 bark cloth (or tapa) samples bound in manuscript book form with quarter leather and marbled paper board cover, gilt titling to the spine, 30cm x 26cm, bound or sold by Henry Sotheran & Co. and with crest bookplate, from the library of Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy FRS (1785-1851), Some leaves of the paper with the watermark J Whatman 1809 (Balston), the example pictured is titled "From the Friendly Islands presented to Mr King". There are a further three same size samples beneath three of the page samples and two smaller fine samples between two others. so a total of 44 Following further extensive research it is possible that this lot was in fact sold as lot 518 in Christie's sale in 1909 from Beaufoy's estate, and was later sold by Sotherans (the purchasers at that sale) as lot 655, see footnote for details. (Booksellers such as Maggs sold similar items, but the fact that our copy has a Sotherans label may indicate that it was later sold by Sotherans) Footnote: It may in fact be that one of the copies held by the National Library of Australia previously thought to have been bought from Sotherans (Lot 655, catalogue extract below), a re-sale of lot 518 in Christies sale in 1909 (see below) may not in fact be from that source. The National Library of Australia's copy does not have a bookplate from Beaufoy's library and does not have a manuscript description to each page. Very many thanks to the National Library of Australia for their assistance. LABEL PASTED IN TO THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF AUSTRALIA'S COPY The description to page 32 in our lot 180 is as described below http://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-90861112/view#page/n0/mode/1up CHRISTIES CATALOGUE ENTRY 7-10 June 1909, London and/or 15-17 June 1909, London Lot 518 'Cook (Captain James) Collection of Specimens of Cloth manufactured by the Natives to Capt. King, who accompanied Capt. Cook on his third Voyage; with brief MS Descriptions, mounted in a vol. half calf' Consignor: Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy Sold for: £8. 8s. (8 guineas) Purchaser: Sotheran Notes in the book refer to the presentation of these samples of cloth to "Mr King", (probably Second Lieutenent King of the crew and astronomer on Cook's voyage to the South Sea Islands). These samples were probably collected during the second voyage of Cook to Owayee (Hawaii), Otaheite and New Amsterdam and the annotation in pencil is from Alexander Shaw's "Catalogue of the different specimens of cloth collected in the three voyages of Captain Cook to the Southern Hemisphere" (or Tapa cloth book) of 1787. Henry B H Beaufoy had a renowned library of 25,000 books which were sold off in the first decade of the twentieth century. When after ll years of teaching drudgery she had stocked up enough cash and confidence to go freelance professional, her life took off. She worked all the hours God gave - in France, in Switzerland, all across the North of England, in oils, in watercolour, in ink and etched line, always responding to the industrial landscape wherever she saw it.
Stan Jones (Welsh, b.1930) "Images Stalk the Trees" signed on the reverse "Stan Jones" watercolour and ink Welsh artist Stan Jones will celebrate his forthcoming 80th birthday with a retrospective exhibition of his Dylan Thomas-inspired works at the Oriel Washington Gallery in Penarth. The artist, who grew up in Pembrokeshire explains, "The exhibition will be a celebration, a retrospective of the work I've done in the past, and includes 80 pieces from the 50s, 60s and 70s into the present." Stan Jones began painting with inspiration from Dylan Thomas' s poetry following a holiday in Cornwall nearly 50 years ago, when his wife was reading a collection of his writing. He explains: "I had been dabbling in the studio but Thomas' s remarks about nature, the sun, moon and stars started me on that angle. I very seriously got going and made an exhibition of about 100 paintings based on his poetry. In his work, Dylan Thomas expresses himself well about the manmade world and the natural world, always referring back to those ideas. He was quite spiritual and that shows in his work too. His lines had been ringing in my mind every time I came to paint. I didn't want any of my pieces to go at that first exhibition because I had grown so attached to them." Jones studied art at Trinity College in Carmarthen and at Cardiff College of Art. He was the former Head of Art at St Cyres School in Penarth, teaching at the school for nearly 30 years. As well as Dylan Thomas' s work, Jones has depicted the poetry of Waldo Williams, a fellow Pembrokeshire man and one of his favourite Welsh language poets. He adds: "My work is perhaps not quite as lyrically abstract now as it was in the 60s. But even the abstract work included ideas based on nature and farming the land. But there haven't been big changes in my work over the years apart from the use of different media, perhaps". Stan Jones: A Retrospective was at at the Oriel Washington Gallery in Penarth, Cardiff from Sunday 4 July to Sunday 25 July 2010. A little discolouration and foxing.
