In 1704, he arrived at Macau, and at Beijing later on in 1705, where Kangxi received him kindly at first, but upon hearing that he came to abolish the Chinese rites (offering sacrifices to Confucius and the ancestors, and in using the Chinese names Ti?n (heaven) and Shàngdì (supreme emperor) for the God of the Christians) among the native Christians, he demanded from all missionaries on pain of immediate expulsion a promise to retain these rites. At Rome, the Holy Office had meanwhile decided against the rites, and Tournon being acquainted with this decision, issued a decree at Nanjing obliging the missionaries under pain of excommunication to abolish these rites. Hereupon, Kangxi ordered Tournon to be imprisoned at Macau and send some Jesuit missionaries to Rome to protest against the decree. Copy with "dopò" (instead of "doppo") in the title, as stated by Streit for the 1709 first edition, and the "Riposta" to verso, but not yet paginated as in the second edition. Provenance: 1) Contemporary ink MS numbering to lower-right margin of title-page; 2) Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013), later red ownership stamp to lower-left margin of title-page.

It is no surprise therefore that within Sir Michael's collection there have been several Rolex with each of them contributing to some of the most iconic images put forward of this phenomenal actor. As his career ascended with successes such as the hit movies Get Carter (1971) and Sleuth (1972), Sir Michael can frequently be pictured wearing one of his gold Rolex. The current lot represents his third notable foray into the world of Rolex with his purchase of an 18K gold Oysterquartz Datejust. Ever the trailblazer rather than crowd follower, Sir Michael was an early convert to the Oysterquartz acquiring his model not long after they first launched in the late 1970s. Sir Michael has confirmed that he wore this watch during numerous roles but, perhaps, most famously as Lawrence Jamieson in the 1988 movie Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. The gold bracelet can be seen nestled within Sir Michaels crisp white suit as he toasts with Steve Martin upon the promotional posters for the film. As with all of his watches, Sir Michael did not distinguish what was exclusive for the movie set versus his private life. Captured in 1982 is a fantastic image by the celebrated American photographer Steve Schapiro (via Getty Images â’¸) where Sir Michael can be seen sat at his home in LA. With cigar in one hand, wine in the other, iconic glasses on - there is no other way to describe this portrait of Sir Michael than cool. Visible upon his wrist and balancing the gold hues given off by his glass of wine is his Rolex Oysterquartz, distinct from other Rolex Day-Dates by the crisp faceted edges that make this design so recognisable. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

(2)Footnotes:The Monastery of Dionysiou was founded in the fourteenth century by Saint Dionysios of Korseos in a village near Kastoria and was dedicated to St John the Baptist. It is thought that St John the Baptist's right hand is among one of the treasures found within the monastery. Fire damage in 1535 resulted in the monastery having to be rebuilt, however, since then the architecture and buildings remain unaltered. Founded in the late tenth to early eleventh century by Saint Paul of Xeropoamou, the Monastery of Agios Pavlos was initially dedicated to Saint George, however, today to Christ the Savior. Among the monastery's possessions, are countless portable icons, heirlooms, holy relics and liturgical vessels. The library within the monastery contains 495 manuscripts and 12,500 printed books. We are grateful to Briony Llewellyn for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

But burned with passion for the South, and drank strange frenzy from its wind...'.Frank Worsley, as the captain of the Endurance, had a crucial role in the survival of all the expedition members. After the ship was crushed in the ice he navigated the crew to safety on Elephant Island, then, in the company of Shackleton and four companions 'embarked upon the epic voyage of 800 miles in the Caird, a 22 foot boat, across the Southern Ocean in some of the stormiest seas in the world, landing at Cape Rosa in South Georgia on 10 May' (ODNB). Worsley, Shackleton, and Crean then crossed the previously unclimbed Allardyce Range to the far side of the island, to reach the whaling stations on the far side of the island. Worsley subsequently served under Shackleton whilst providing provisions to the northern Russian front, and as captain of the Quest, confirmation of the high esteem each man had for the other. The 2-stanza poem, 'We were the fools...', which Worsley writes out, was a favourite of Shackleton. On 5 December 1914, 'as Endurance sailed from South Georgia... [Shackleton] wrote in his diary the first verse of a poem by St John Lucas called The Ship of Fools' (James Caird Society, Newsletter 13, Summer 2019).Provenance: Gift inscription from Frank Worsley (1872-1943) to his future wife Jean Cuming (1900-1978). SHACKLETON (ERNEST)Printed Order of Service for Shackleton's Memorial Service at St Paul's Cathedral on Thursday March 2nd 1922, 8 pages, 8vo (194 x 128mm.); with printed admission ticket, 96 x 121mm.; an envelope addressed to Commander Roderick Day, R.N.; and an autograph letter from Roderick Day to a friend, dated April 1903 (4)Footnotes:Commander Roderick Day, R.N. (d.1935) served as Third Mate on the Terra Nova during the 1903-1904 British Antarctic Relief Expedition, whose aim was, in company with the Morning, to assist the return of the Discovery under Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Shackleton was then designated Third Officer on the expedition in charge of holds, stores, provisions and the entertainments. John Georgeson Sutherland speaks at length of Day's subsequent naval career in his book At Sea with Joseph Conrad, published in 1922, where he describes Day as having been chosen for the Terra Nova expedition 'for the reason of his powerful physique and extraordinary strength as much as for his tact and cheeriness'. His experience in the polar regions led his posting to the Arctic during the First War where was instrumental in building infrastructure and in preventing valuable munitions and supplies falling into the hands of the Germans. He was awarded the OBE for his services. Having spoken of his old friend to Joseph Conrad, whom he met aboard the brigantine H.M.S. Ready (supposedly the inspiration for Conrad's The Tale), Sutherland comments that Conrad '...was glad that a sailor should have been selected, and pleased that he should have accomplished so much, and he often referred to it afterwards...' When the 1903 expedition was formed White had already been in Sikkim for at least fifteen years.
