TWO SMALL ANCIENT EGYPTIAN BRONZES,both 26th-27th Dynasty, circa 664-545 B.C., the first a rare amulet cast as a calf's hoof, 3cm long, the second a votive of Apis, the sacred bull of Memphis, bearing the solar disc and uraeus on his head, 2.5cm long, the latter with base, both with Certificate of Authenticity. Apis was an incarnation of Ptah and was worshipped at Memphis for three millennia; whenever the bull died a wide search would be carried out for a successor, identified by black and white markings; this calf would be kept in its own temple where they would fulfill various 'duties' including the role of an oracle and received votives such as this from worshippers, presumably purchased from the temple priests.Provenance: Patrick Campbell, Ancient Magic, Antiquities Dealers Association accredited member
