MAKOVITZKY DOUCHAN: (1866-1921) Slovak Doctor, Disciple of Tolstoy and his Doctor and Assistant in his last six years. Rare set of two autograph letters signed by Makovitzky, written from Tolstoy´s home, referring to the writer with whom he did share his last years day by day, and responding on his behalf to correspondents. The first being, A.L.S., D.P.Makovitzky, three pages, 8vo, Yasnaya Polyana, 8th October 1910, to Piotr Petrovich, in Cyrillic. Makovitzky states `Lev Nikolaevich [Tolstoy] received your book Poniatie o Boge (The Concept of God), on September 19th, in Kochaki. If he did not write to you before about it, it´s because he was first returning to Yasnaya Polyana where a large number of letters were waiting for him to answer, but what was more important than this was Sofia Andreyevna´s illness, and also now his own illness…Kudrin's story must have been sent to you by V. Tchertkoff…Lev Nikolaevich has been reading Strakhov's book, Iskanie Istiny (The Search of Truth) for two months, and likes it…I would like to ask you a favour. Could you send me a copy of your book, not so much for me, but for Lev Nikolaevich' friends?´. The second being, A.L.S., Dr. Dusan Makovitzky, eight pages, 8vo, Yasnaya Polyana, 7th November, 1910, to Piotr Petrovich, in Cyrillic. Makovitzky states `As soon as I received your first letter I asked A. Sergeenko (he has the volumes I and II of Poniatie o Boge that he took to Astapovo), who lives now at Tchertkoff's place in Yasenki, to let me write out the annotations of Lev Nikolaevich for you. He said that he will do it himself. Be patient, you will receive them, if not, write directly to him. I apologise for not answering to you earlier. I have been in Shamordino, visiting Lev Nikolaevich's sister.´ and further continues `This is what I could hear Lev Nikolaevich saying about your book Poniatie o Boge. On October 18th, "If he has borrowed from me, I´ll find in his writings what I should have said. Chapters that I have read from the volume II are remarkable". He was not happy with the context of the volume I: I think that Nikolaev will rewrite it.´ and continues reporting on Tolstoy´s words `The other day I asked Lev Nikolaevich what he thinks about Dostoevsky's "The Brothers Karamazov". He said that there was a lack of artistic quality. Characters say what the author thinks, and use his language. Wonderful ideas, religious content. It is surprising how it can be so popular. It seems that the religiuos content attracts people´s attention. Nikolaev says that "human being is nothing without religion". Lev Nikolaevich says that "the humanity will destroy itself". The reason to love must be different - the fulfillment of the will of God. In the second chapter Nikolaev says that "all major religious teachings indicate what the meaning of life consists of, but the followers distort it by introducing superstitions". The science cleans up religion from such superstitions that darken the real teaching. Scientists such as Buckle, Renan, religious people, clean up religion without knowing it. Lev Nikolaevich disagreed with that idea.´ Makovitzky continues with a lengthy report and concludes stating `Your book Poniatie o Boge was the only one in the last six years that touched Lev Nikolaevich. It was his only consolation in this last difficult months of his life.´ An extremely interesting content letter with good association.
