Aviation legend Alan S Butler, the first private aeroplane owner-driver typed signed letter regarding flying in Kings Cup Air Race 1922. During the afternoon of Sunday 10th September 1922, pilot, Alan Samuel Butler, flew from the de Havilland aerodrome in London to Broadway, landing his de Havilland bi-plane in the grounds of Farncombe Estate where he spent the weekend. Butler (1898-1897) was the first private aeroplane owner. In 1921, Butler asked Geoffrey de Havilland to build him an aircraft to his own specifications and the first DH37 was built, which Butler named 'Sylvia' after his sister. Butler was one of 13 pilots to finish in the first King's Cup Race held on 8th and 9th September 1922. The 810 mile race from Croydon to Glasgow, and back again after an overnight stop, was established by King George V as an incentive to the development of aircraft and engine design. Butler was so impressed with the de Haviland company that he helped the company financially with their venture into aircraft manufacture and was appointed Chairman in 1923, a role he held until 1950. WW2 Hand Signed Letter Sir John Smyth Vc And Leadership Of War Book. Ex Library hardback book. The 1974 letter on his personal stationary to Editor of Books and Bookmen has interesting content. Dear Sir Mr Enoch Powell tells me he has sent you a review of my above book and I would be grateful if you could send me a copy of the number in which it appears. The publishers have informed me that owing to the printing strike the official publication date is likely to be later in July than their original date of 11th July. Yours Truly Jackie Smyth. He was 21 years old, and a lieutenant in the 15th Ludhiana Sikhs, 3rd (Lahore) Division, Indian Army during the First World War, when his actions earned him the Victoria Cross (VC). In June 1915, Smyth was awarded the VC, the United Kingdom's highest award for bravery in combat. The citation for this award, published in the London Gazette read: For most conspicuous bravery near Richebourg L'Avoue on 18 May 1915. With a bombing party of 10 men, who voluntarily undertook this duty, he conveyed a supply of 96 bombs to within 20 yards of the enemy's position over exceptionally dangerous ground, after the attempts of two other parties had failed. Lieutenant Smyth succeeded in taking the bombs to the desired position with the aid of two of his men (the other eight having been killed or wounded), and to effect his purpose he had to swim a stream, being exposed the whole time to howitzer, shrapnel, machine-gun and rifle fire. Jacob Epstein (1880–1959) First Portrait of Roma of Barbados Bronze Edition of up to 6 (two other casts known) Epstein made several portraits of Black women in the 1920s and 1930s, including two of this sitter. Although Epstein calls her ‘Roma of Barbados’, Roma was born in West Ham, in 1905 to a Black Caribbean father and white mother. In the 1939 census, she described herself as a ‘film and stage artist’. In 1933, Epstein made a second portrait of Roma, which includes her upper torso. The proudly-held head and wide-eyed, slightly dreamy gaze imbue this first study with great dignity, serenity, and timelessness. The bust-length portrait of Roma made the following year is arguably less successful because the head is more generalised, and its impact is diluted by an unconvincing torso, which appears unfinished. Dimensions: 16 in. (H) (Bronze) 35.5 cm (H)

Henry Moret (French, 1856-1913) Riviere de St Maurice 1905 Signed lower right, 'Moret' Oil on canvas Provenance: Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris (Stock no. 8632); Chester H. Johnson Gallery, Chicago, USA; Anon. Sale Christie's New York, October 8 1987, Lot 32; Private Collection, Switzerland; With Connaught Brown; Private Collection, UK (acquired from the above December 1998). Exhibited, Connaught Brown, The Winter Exhibition, November 1998 - January 1999 This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Monsieur J.Y Rolland, who is currently preparing the catalogue raisonne. Born in Cherbourg in 1856 Moret remained drawn to the North of France and his maritime roots and spent almost his entire life living and working in Brittany. Moret began his career in Paris, working in the ateliers of J-L Gerome and J.P. Laurens and made. his first appearance at the Salon in 1880. However he was to move rapidly away from academic conventions and concentrated on working ‘en plein an'. Along with Gustave Loiseau, and Maxime Maufra, Moret was part of the group of young artists who clustered around Gauguin at Pont-Aven. From 1891 Moret applied the principles of synthetism to his work: in particular, the massing of colour zones and reduction of tonal effects, and the establishment of clear planes in pictorial structure. This latter element was always to remain a characteristic feature of his work. Moret’s travels around the morbihonnaise coast before he settled in Douelan in 1896, and the time he spent in the Iles de Groix and d’Ouessant observing and studying local peasant customs and the world of fishermen, was to concentrate his attention on marine subjects. These preoccupied him almost exclusively for the rest of his career. In 1895 Moret met the famous Neo-Impressionist dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel, who immediately took him on. From this time, Moret increasingly adopted Impressionist values and techniques: his brushwork became more broken and spontaneous; and the use of colour more varied, with tones inter-mingled. La Riviere Saint-Maurice exemplifies his virtuosity in this, capturing the fleeting atmosphere of a sunny day in the undisturbed Brittany countryside and the rich and varied waters of the river. The river depicted is most likely located in the surrounding area of the Abbatial site of St Maurice in the Finistere, Brittany. Dimensions: (Frame) 21 in. (H) x 26 in. (W) (Canvas) 13 in. (H) x 18 in. (W)
