Buist, R C, E O`Brien (on behalf of he committee) and others The New Meal-Poke . . . (1922 edition limited to 200 copies) `Poke` usually means a sack (as in `a pig in a poke`) but in the context of this Dundee SRC publication it means a stomach or belly: thus, in the first (1903) edition of Meal-Poke, `Tradition tells that [after] each Meal Monday the Scottish Student returned to College with his poke replenished and his heart refreshed`. This limited edition of the 1922 production (`The New Meal-Poke`) - this copy is number 171 of the limited de luxe edition of 200 copies, initialled by the two principal editors - is a beautiful production. The soft tan leather covers (upper and lower panels blind embossed to designs of Andrew Macfarlane) overlap the boards, hiding most of the text-block, in the fashion of some Bibles. The text stock is watermarked `Arnold Unbleached`. The folded sections remain uncut at the top and untrimmed at the other two edges. The plates are printed on art paper and inserted singly, each with its tissue guard present. This very good copy would be rated fine without a split lower front hinge, lightly rubbed covers and sunned endpapers and front and lower page edges. The writer contributors include names still well known, including Earl Haig, the Chancellor, Sir James Barry, the Rector (who also contributed to the 1903 predecessor), Thomas Hardy, John Drinkwater and Jeffrey Farnol. The illustrators may be less well known today but, as the images show, their work is equally distinguished. An extremely fortunate find, the copy has bright white unmarked text and pristine plates and, as already mentioned, has never had all its pages turned. Publisher Place: Dundee, Scotland Publisher: Students Representative Council, University of St Andrews, University College, Dundee Publication Date: 1922 Condition: Very Good Size: 260 x 195 Category: Ephemera & Vintage Paper Reserve: $100

Includes bibliographical references and index. `The first two volumes, part of the unique on-going research project of South African Friends of Beth Hatefutsoth (or the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora), have enjoyed great success among readers, both in South Africa and abroad. Volume One focused on the northern and eastern Transvaal areas (mainly comprising today`s Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces). Volume Two focused on the Western Cape. The final instalments will cover the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, and the southern Gauteng area, including the various towns on the East and West Rand. The third volume chronicles the history of the once strong and now largely vanished Jewish presence in the smaller towns and rural districts of South Africa, has now been published. The book starts with the earliest settlement of Jews in South Africa, before and including the 1820 Settlers. The areas covered in the new volume include the Garden Route, Little Karoo, the Cape-Midlands, Overberg and Settler country. The research covers almost 1500 small towns and villages in South Africa where Jews lived. No village, hamlet or railway siding has been too small; so long as there has been a Jewish presence there, every location has found its way into the record. In addition to recording the story of the various Jewish communities, it also recounts the history of the places in which they lived. The book also includes many colorful anecdotes of life in the country towns and villages, as well as numerous hitherto unpublished photographs`. Inscription on flep of Volume 1, a fine set. Wolhuter (H.) MEMORIES OF A GAME RANGER 313pgs + index. Cloth hardcover with gilt vignettes and titles to front cover and spine. With 17 b/w plates and numerous line illustrations within the text. Maps printed on EPS. A very good clean and tight copy. A fascinating account of the author`s 44 years as a game ranger at Kruger National Park in South Africa where he began his career in 1902. First published in 1948 this memorable book on South African wildlife was reprinted in the each of the two following years, with the fourth edition in 1953, the 5th in 1955, the 6th in 1958 and this 7th edition in 1961. In it the author recalls his experiences and observations from 44 years,as a ranger in the famed Kruger National Park. When he retired from that position in 1946 he was persuaded to compile a record of his life and work over those years, these include interesting recollections from his earlier adventurous years about the time of the Boer War. His vast range of encounters with man and beast, his dealing with the native people and tourists are woven together here to present an complex pattern of events and incidents, natural history, anthropology, risks and rewards to name a few of many absorbing aspects in the life of this outstanding individual. Memorable are his observation of the animals, birds other wild life and vegetation of the African lansdscape. One early incident saw him killing a fully-grown male lion with a knife, after it seized him and was dragging him off. Although this ordeal resulted in permanent injuries, it did not impact on his activities as a ranger or his devotion to his task. C T Astley-Maberly, who edited the original manuscript at the author`s request, was also a professional artist specialising in wildlive subjects. Edited by Marilyn Martin and Joe Dolby Albert Adams – Journey On A Tightrope English, Monograph, Softcover, 285x230mm, full colour, 120 pages. Catalogue of the first comprehensive retrospective exhibition of works by Albert Adams ran at Iziko Museum. Albert Adams was born in Johannesburg in 1930 but at the age of four came to Cape Town with his mother and sister. Unable to study at the Michaelis School of Art, University of Cape Town, because of the apartheid policies, he applied for, and was awarded a scholarship to study at the Slade School of Art in London where he studied from 1953 to 1956. He enrolled for a brief course of study at the Munich Academy of Arts and later in 1957 attended master classes under the internationally renowned artist, Oskar Kokoschka. Often his subject matter is inspired by international events but he always returned to South Africa for inspiration, depicting, amongst others, the homeless people of Cape Town, the darker side of the Cape Minstrels and in a more allusive way the ‘baggage’ or legacy of apartheid. Payne,David & Emma The Writings, Photographs & Sketches of Henry Charles Harford 1850-1937(SIGNED by BOTH AUTHORS and Dr. Adrian Greaves) Henry Charles Harford was an entomologist and a vibrant personality of the Anglo Zulu War. Harford had always fascinated David Rattray, the world famous lecturer on the Anglo Zulu War of 1879 and himself a qualified entomologist. David gave countless world-wide presentations and always wove the story of `Charlie Harford the beetle collector` into his entralling lectures. Harford participated in a number of important actions during the Zulu War and was at Rorke`s Drift until the invasion of Zululand. He led the first attack against the local Zulu Chief Sihayo and accompanied Lord Chlemsford on his ill-fated reconnaissance which left the main British camp at Isandlwana unprepared for a full Zulu attack the following day. He witnessed the result of the Zulu victory at Isandlwana and went on to see the aftermath at Rorke`s Drift; he then supervised the disbandment of the Natal Native Contingent. At the same time his senior officer, Commandant Lonsdale, gave Harford custody of two officer deserters, Lieutenants Higginson and Stephenson; both officers had abandoned their men in action against the Zulus and the situation caused Harford some perplexing moments. Following the Zulu defeat on the 4th July 1879 Harford was part of the force that searched for King Cetshwayo and he was personally given the custody of King Cetshwayo folowing his capture until the king was imprisoned at Cape Town. The authors have faithfully transcribed Harford`s notes, diaries and journals using his own spelling and syntax. Where this needs clarification, the modern usage has been included)in italics). Harford`s use of punctuation is old fashioned and many of his sentences run into several lines. Where this has caused confusion, the editor has added the occasional comma or full stop. Otherwise, this project is a faithful reproduction of Harford`s hand-written records. Hardcover with dustcover.Signed to 1/2 title page by David and Emma Payne/Adrian Greaves and Audrey-Harford`s Grand-daughter. xx plus 304 pages detailed text, maps and illustrations. Churchill, W.S. Ian Hamilton`s March This is the second of two books that chronicle Churchill`s adventures during the Boer War, which included capture and confinement as a prisoner of war and a daring escape that helped launch his fame and political career. This volume of letters to the Morning Post continues on from Churchill`s earlier book `London to Ladysmith via Pretoria`. The contents set forth the march of Ian Hamilton`s column `on the flank of Lord Roberts` main army,` from Bloemfontein to Pretoria, and it is stated that this force `encountered and overcame the brunt of the Boer resistance,` and traversing 400 miles of the enemy`s country, fought ten general actions and fourteen smaller affairs, capturing five towns. There is an interesting account of the life of the captured officers in Pretoria, and the volume contains a portrait of General Ian Hamilton, and a number of maps and plans illustrating his march. This is the second, and best, edition, published only one month after the first, `and was heavily corrected... and contains four reports not previously published` [Ref: Woods, A5]; (409pp. excluding adverts and index). The contents of this copy contain sporadic spotting typically found in this edition, with heavier patches of spotting evident in the preliminaries and title page, continuing to page 14 (end of chapter one) with more spotting occurring toward the end of the book, from around p.354 to the end of the appendix at p.409, and continuing through the three leaves of advertising just after the fold-out map. One owner inscription at top of first preliminary (in pen) and another pencil note on verso of f.f.e-p. The original black end-papers are intact and in good condition, with the tissue-guard protecting the title page from the portrait frontispiece. The rear folding map is in very good condition. The red cloth binding is good, though the spine is showing wear and fading, with a two inch split to the cloth on the bottom hinge, a small ink stain on spine title, and some puckering at the spine ends. The binding is cracked between pp.144/145 and again at pp.160/161 and 384/385, however all gatherings are intact (no loose pages). He was the second white man to see the falls, the first to have reached them from the east coast (Natal), and the first to describe them with exactness and give their true dimensions, the accuracy of which he vouched for to David Livingstone himself, when the great explorer arrived about 8th or 9th August.’ Publisher Place: London Publisher: Richard Bentley Publication Date: 1863 Condition: Very Good Size: 8vo (225 x 140 mm) Category: Hunting & Shooting Reserve: $250 Click here to view further details and images

Intelligence Branch, War Office Zulu War - Narrative of the Field Operations The official history of the Anglo-Zulu Wars, compiled by the Intelligence Branch of the then War Office for publication immediately after the campaign. It was and has remained the definitive account of the Zulu Wars from a British standpoint, and it has formed the basis of all subsequent serious works on the campaign. First published in 1881 and reprinted in 1907, Narrative fully recounts through Military Intelligence sources the conduct of and background to the campaign - in terms of both military actions and political events. Of particular importance in this official history are the detailed accounts of the battles of Isandhlwana and Rorke`s Drift - the first of which was the worst defeat inflicted on a British force by a native army, whose consequences would lead to the downfall of Disraeli`s government; and the second of which resulted in the award of eleven Victoria Crosses, the most ever gained in a single action.
