[Jacobite Rebellion - Battle of Prestonpans] - Sir John Cope Two autograph letters from Sir John Cope to Lt.-General Thomas Fowke ("Dear Fowke"), sending news of national affairs "The eyes of all Europe are upon our Affairs in America, which 'tis imagined will draw consequences in this part of the World, for which wee are so formidably prepared by our natural strength, the Navy, that if Spain will but continue to think according to her old proverb, Peace with England & War with all the World, so far only...", expressing his desire (with a tacit reference to his unpopularity after 1745) ("I am just as desirous not to be employed, as those who could employ me are unwilling to do it, so in that we are perfectly agreed"), reporting that he hears well of Fowke's Governership of Gibraltar, mentioning "Mr paymaster Pit", telling him about the regime and life he follows at the spas of Bath and Cheltenham (... I find the company at Chiltenham is not very numerous, and by those you name none very entertaining..."), thanking him for sending him a fine Spanish horse, &c., 2pp & 2pp., St. James Place, 19 July 1753, & Bath, 8 July 1755 Note; The first important battle of the rebellion was at Prestonpans on 27 September 1745 and this was a decisive victory for Charles over Sir John Cope who was Lieutentant-General, Commander of King George I's forces in Scotland. There is a paucity of knowledge about Cope's life after his Court of Inquiry in 1746. After he was defeated at the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745 he was the subject of the Jacobite song "Hey, Johnnie Cope! Are ye waukin yet ?" Autograph letters by him are very rare.

Dukes of Hamilton - carte-de-visite album 118 cartes-de-visite, 3 cabinet cards, 14 albumen prints relating to the Dukes of Hamilton, probably compiled by Lady Mary Victoria Douglas-Hamilton (1850-1922), including photographs by Disdéri, Camille Silvy, Henry Peach Robinson, Alexander Bassano, Serge Levitsky, John Mayall and Thomas Annan, 19th century embossed morocco album, some fading and occasional light foxing, clasp broken, rubbed Provenance: From a private collection, purchased in Florence in 1968 Note: The album seemingly once belonged to a member of the immediate family of William Douglas-Hamilton, 11th Duke of Hamilton (1811-1863). It was probably compiled by his daughter, Lady Mary Victoria Douglas-Hamilton (1850-1922), who married Prince Albert I of Monaco in 1869. That marriage was annulled ten years later and she subsequently married the Hungarian nobleman Tasziló Festetics de Tolna. Among her descendants are Prince Rainier III of Monaco, the fashion designer Prince Egon von Fürstenberg, the socialite and actress Princess Ira von Fürstenberg and the Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Karel Schwarzenberg. The album contains eight portraits of Lady Mary Victoria, including an engagement portrait taken with her first husband, Prince Albert I of Monaco. Among the other members of her family represented in the album are her father, the 11th Duke of Hamilton (7); her mother, Princess Marie Amelie of Baden (2); her brother, the 12th Duke of Hamilton (2); her younger brother, 7th Earl of Selkirk (1); her cousin, Lady Susan Vane-Tempest (8); her cousin, the 6th Duke of Newcastle (7); his wife, the Duchess of Newcastle (8); and their son, the 7th Duke of Newcastle (2). Lady Susan Vane-Tempest (1839-1875), daughter of the 5th Duke of Newcastle, was for several years a mistress of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). Fearful of a scandal, he distanced himself from her when she bore his illegitimate child in 1871. Nothing is known of the baby's subsequent fate. Lady Susan died four years later, aged only 35. The album also contains a number of views of Hamilton Palace, the Hamilton Mausoleum, and Brodick Castle. There are also several reproductions of works of art depicting Lady Mary Victoria's ancestors: the notorious William Beckford: his wife Lady Margaret Gordon: and their daughter, Susan Euphemia Beckford, who married the 10th Duke of Hamilton in 1810.

He moved to Auckland in the 1870's where he met businessman Henry Partridge who, over 30 years, commissioned from Lindauer numerous portraits of eminent Maori, as well as large-scale depictions of traditional Maori life and customs. Many prominent Maori chiefs commissioned his work, which accurately records their facial tattoos, clothing, ornaments and weapons. His life-size portraits were exhibited by Sir Walter Buller at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, 1886, and in 1901 Partridge, Lindauer's earliest and most important patron, opened a gallery in Auckland which featured 40 of Lindauer's Maori portraits. By the time Partridge sold his Lindauer collection to the Auckland Art Gallery in 1915, there were 62 portraits. The historian James Cowan (1870-1943), who wrote the descriptive catalogue of the exhbition, described the collection as 'Unrivalled in the world' and a record of the 'old order' which in his opinion 'passed away forever' with King Tawhiao's death in 1894.
