Attributed to Germano Prosdocimi, after the Grimani Breviary – Saint Barbara, 19th century watercolour with gouache, 22.5cm x 17cm, within a Dutch style ebonized wood and tortoiseshell ripple frame. Note: The Grimani Breviary, one of the most exquisite, illuminated manuscripts of the Renaissance, was created in Flanders in the 1510s by several artists. It is named after its first known owner, the Venetian cardinal Domenico Grimani, who acquired it around 1520. Today, it is housed in the collections of the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice. Germano Prosdocimi is known to have copied pages from the Grimani Breviary several times during the 1850s and 1860s.

Albert Namatjira – Australian Landscape with Trees and Mountains, early/mid-20th century watercolour, signed, 30cm x 46.5cm, within a gilt composition frame. Note: Albert Namatjira (1902-1959) was a pioneering Aboriginal Australian artist known for his distinctive watercolour landscapes that captured the beauty of the Australian outback. Born Elea Namatjira and raised in the Hermannsburg Lutheran Mission in the Northern Territory, he was educated in both Aboriginal traditions and Western customs. Namatjira discovered his talent for painting in his mid-30s after meeting the artist Rex Battarbee, who was touring Central Australia. Battarbee taught him the techniques of watercolor painting, and Namatjira quickly developed a unique style that combined Western techniques with his deep spiritual connection to the land. His works vividly portrayed the rugged and vibrant landscapes of Central Australia, especially the MacDonnell Ranges, using soft hues and detailed brushwork. His art gained widespread acclaim, and by the 1940s, Namatjira had become one of Australia's most celebrated artists. He was the first Aboriginal Australian to achieve commercial success in the Western art world, holding numerous exhibitions across Australia. His fame also brought attention to the cultural and political issues faced by Aboriginal people at the time. Despite his success, Namatjira's life was marked by the complexities of navigating two cultures. Although he was granted limited citizenship rights in 1957, he still faced significant legal and social discrimination, pressed home in 1958 by his imprisonment for supplying alcohol to an Aboriginal person. Namatjira's legacy endures as a trailblazer in Australian art. His work not only opened doors for future Aboriginal artists but also helped to change perceptions of Aboriginal culture in Australia. Provenance: Sir John Galvin (1908-1994), thence by family descent.
Annie Louisa Swynnerton née Robinson – Girl on a Swing, 19th century oil on canvas, signed, 107cm x 81.5cm, within a gilt composition frame of wide section. Note: Annie Louisa Swynnerton née Robinson was born in Manchester in 1844, where she developed an early interest in art. She studied at the Manchester School of Art before furthering her education at the Académie Julian in Paris. Her work was significantly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and Italian Renaissance artists. Swynnerton became a pioneering figure in the art world, particularly as a woman in a male-dominated field. She was the first female associate of the Royal Academy of Arts, elected in 1922. Her portraits, often of strong and thoughtful women, garnered considerable acclaim. She also painted landscapes and genre scenes, displaying a deep appreciation for light and form. Throughout her career, Swynnerton exhibited at all the principal venues including the Royal Academy, the Paris Salon, and the Grosvenor Gallery. She was friends with many prominent artists and intellectuals of her time, including the sculptor Joseph Swynnerton, whom she married in 1883, as well as the Pankhurst family. Swynnerton was an active supporter of the Women's suffrage movement and a signatory to the 1889 National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies' Declaration. Swynnerton's legacy is that of a trailblazer who broke barriers for women artists and left behind a body of work that has largely been underappreciated since her death in 1933.

PITCAIRN ISLAND - an oval red miro wood basket, with handle, shaped rim and the turned outer body with letter punched floral decoration and punched 'Pitcairn Island' and maker's name 'John Christian', 22.5cm x 18.5cm. Similar example see Christie's 'Exploration & Travel Including The Bligh Relics' sale, 26th September 2002, Lot no. 70. Notes: a basket made by 1 of the Bounty mutineer Fletcher Christian's descendants on Pitcairn Island. This first recorded John Christian was Fletcher Christian's Great-Grandson, born on Pitcairn in 1843, possibly maker of the present basket, although the woodworking tradition and manufacture of souvenirs to sell to passing ships continues on the island to this day. The outer body of the present basket is turned in red miro, which grew on Pitcairn and on neighbouring Henderson Island, where the islanders sailed to replenish stocks of timber. The upright surround has 1 vertical split but this does appear to be a natural flaw in the design and has a small piece of metal connecting both ends of split, otherwise only general surface wear and a few small water stain patches
