Albert Clark (1843-1928)'Bury Victor Chief', a shire horse in a stable;A grey shire horse in a stablea pair the first inscribed with title, the second signed 'A Clark' l.l., oil on canvas30.5 x 40.5cm (2)Condition ReportGrey shire horse - The surface is covered with a thick and shiny varnish, the canvas is lined and there are slight stretcher marks and a little craquelure. Under UV light there is a little retouching places, mainly along the lower edge and a little strengthening around the horse.Bury Victor Chief - as above, the canvas is line with a thick shiny varnish. This one has more extensive retouching to the background, particularly to the left side, also to the right stretcher mark. There is a little retouching to the haunches and legs of the horse. On this example, the signature flares, suggesting it is either added or strengthened due to the general retouching around that area.
François Millet (French, 1851-1917)A mountain village with goats in the foregroundsigned 'F. Millet, Flis' l.r., oil on canvas45 x 54cmCondition ReportThe canvas is unlined. There are several patches to the reverse which correspond to the lower left of the composition and correspond to three repaired tears. The largest of these stretches from the right group of goats across to the figure (approx. 11cm in length). The second is just above this to the right of the figure's head (approx.5 x 3.5cm), and the third a little higher to the left, above the roof tops to the lighter blue area in just below the tress (5cm). See additional UV images. There are 2 further small patches, the first behind the stretcher bar lower centre, the second corresponds to the distant cattle grazing in the field, however, these areas do not fluoresce under UV light, stuggesting any restoration or retouching must be fairly minimal.
William Anslow Thornley (fl.1858-1898)St Michael's Mount at sunset;A bonfire on the beach, figures waiting for the catcha pair, the first signed 'W Thornley' l.l., oil on canvas35.5 x 30.5cm (2)Condition Reportoverall: 44 x 38.5cmBoth examples have been lined, there is a fine craquelure. Under UV light, there is a thick layer of varnish which slightly obscures the surface, however, there does not appear to be any signs of damage or restoration. Some surface dirt, would benefit from a light clean to lift the colours.
Sidney Richard Percy (1821-1886)A mountainous river landscape with an angler;A river landscape with cattle watering, a figure resting in the foregroundthe first signed and dated 'S R Percy 1871' l.l., the second 'S R Percy 61' l.r.28 x 48cm (2)Condition ReportBoth parts are relined. The varnish is a little uneven and discoloured in places, which makes the sky in particular look a little uneven. Some craquelure in parts. It seems probable that there has been some retouching to both parts in the sky, however, under UV light I can only really see:angler - a little retouching to the extreme bottom edge and a thin line that would correspond to an old stretcher mark cattle - some infilling to the craquelure in the white tones of the water and also the sky.

A Leica 1 Model A, circa 1925 Please note this is a Leica model I circa 1930 not 1925 as previously catalogued. Black enamelled finish has been worn away from most of the baseplate and around the edges of the top plate. All exposed metalwork is oxidised and worn. Eyepiece has lost its glass internals but for the back glass. A blob of near matching black enamel has been placed over the number and green foil stuck below it (and also at one end). Spools and shutter working. A few notes on the Leicas' history from the vendor.WW1, my grandfather, graduated from Osbourne house ( pre Dartmouth naval collage ) in 1915 took command of a H Class submarine - the squadron was based Great Yarmouth. The photo showing Jolly Roger is him returning after sinking the heavy cruiser ' Deutschland, the other the submarine itself. Few months later, he himself was attached by U Boat; ensuing zig zag, his boat was hit: there were only 3 survivors - my grandfather was one. The U Boat surfaced, picked up the survivors. At that time, German army guarded POWs' treated airmen and submariners badly. The U Boat commander decided to keep my grandfather in ' close quarters ' at the Wilmshaven naval base.My grandfather & the German commander became friends. Grandfather remained here for rest of war - the Admiralty were not told, my grandmother received telegram advising ' lost in action,' ( I have the telegram ) Some 11 months later she received a letter via red cross advising he was alive and well....The German commander was on of the Neuirecher wine family.Post WW1 the two families retained contact: this included visits of the children of both families. About 1935 / 36 Frau Neuirecher gave my father the Leica. He and his brother, both graduated from Dartmouth - also becoming submariners. My father kept the camera with him throughout, to include his time on Dorchester in the Bismark action: two of his paintings of the sinking are at Imperial war museum. He continued to S Boats and XCraft - for action against Tirpitz & Bergen. Somewhere I have photos taken by the Leica of these times.Post war, my father & his brothers took control of German windfall yachts, bringing them over to Portsmouth. One was Marabu, Goring's yacht. They camaigned Marabu to include fitting a mizen mast. One photo is of Marubu tuning the mizen. My uncle is at the helm wearing white submariners pullover & cap. The photo was taken by my father using the Leica. The other photos were also taken with the Leica of various family activities. In 1956 my uncle sailed to Bemuda in Marabu for the first post war Onion Patch sailing series versus US Navy. He borrowed the Leica - took reels of film - including a severe storm under bare poles: problem - he forgot to pull the lens out to activate...I can remember my father using the Leica - I was never allowed to go near it: it stayed in a drawer following his death in 1993.I have never used it as by then the SLR was the mode.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place.
