Full title: Johann Siebmacher: Das Neue Wappenbuch (The new book of armorials), 1605, NeurenbergDescription:Dim.: 21,5 x 17 x 5 cm Ref.: Stadtisches Museum Schloss Rheydt, inv. no. 1094531, for another example. (External link available on rm-auctions.com) This hand-coloured example is the first edition of Sibmacher's magnus opus. The Holy Roman Empire consisted of hundreds of sovereign states and individual dominions. The variety of families operating in this framework and their diverse relationships with one another was similarly confusing. Reference works like this coat of arms compendium attempted to provide an overview. The structure of the coats of arms is based on the structure of the Holy Roman Empire. First the coats of arms of the emperor and the electors are shown, then those of the other princes, counts, etc. The title page proudly points out that over 3,320 coats of arms are shown. Under the register, we find thee printer's mark: Printed in Nuremberg by Christoph Lochner / Published by Johann Sibmacher, / In the 1605th year. Johann Ambrosius Siebmacher (1561-1611) was a German coat of arms painter and engraver in Nuremberg, who is today best known for his Wappenbüchlein/Wappenbuch. The 1605 edition shows the most with 264 coats of arms. Siebmacher's book of arms became the standard work of heraldry and supplementary volumes were published until 1806. A total of around 19,000 coats of arms are represented. In the late 19th and 20th centuries, further coats of arms collections followed with the 'Neuer Siebmacher'.Condition reports:Condition reports (unless otherwise specified above):Please contact us on info@rm-auctions.com to request a condition report. Full title: Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533): Esther before Ahasuerus, engraving, 16th C.Description:Dim.: 28,5 x 23,5 cm In June 1521, in the diary that Albrecht Durer kept of his journey to the Netherlands from July 12, 1520, to July 15, 1521, he wrote that he had met 'Master Lucas ... a little man, born in Leyden in Holland.' On that day he drew Lucas's portrait in metalpoint (now in Lille, Musee des Beaux-Arts), and a few days later the two exchanged prints. This terse account is the only surviving written document of the meeting between the German artist and his younger Netherlandish counterpart, an encounter that brought together two consummate printmakers who were to leave their mark on the development of the medium in Europe for the next century. Durer was the first to bring together the separate traditions of woodcut and engraving, and his prints in both these media, the product of his apparently inexhaustible imagination, began to attract notice almost as soon as he started making them in the 1490's. Well before the end of the decade, with a print such as 'Samson Rending the Lion', Durer had elevated woodcut to the level of engraving. Lines as lively and free as these, and compositions as dense and complex, had never before been executed in woodcut. By 1500, with his engravings 'The Prodigal Son' and, especially, some esoteric allegorical such as 'The Dream of the Doctor' and 'Hercules at the Crossroads', had established the medium as a bearer of highly sophisticated images and subjects, of meanings. In 1521 Durer was fifty, and he had created most of his more than three hundred prints (indeed, throughout his trip to the Netherlands he stayed ahead of his expenses by selling a number of them). His extraordinary production established the possibility of the print as a medium for artistic ideas in an unprecedented way. Lucas van Leyden, close to twenty years younger than Durer, was a prodigy who was said to have begun making prints when he was nine years old. He also was famous by 1521, and his engravings, such as the poignant 'Saint Paul Led away to Damascus', were admired both for their unusual or unexpectedly treated subjects and for their refined, delicate style. Both artists' innovations had a striking influence on Renaissance printmaking and on subsequent developments of the medium. Remarkably, their creative inventions were built on techniques for suggesting form and tone in a purely black-and-white medium that had only recently been invented and honed by Gothic artists such as Master ES and Martin Schongauer, who had guided the print from its roots as a comparatively coarse craft and workshop by-product to a refined and noble art. At the time of Lucas's and Durer's meeting, printmaking had only a fifty-year history as a medium capable of producing the type of sophisticated artwork that these two men created. Full title: A Chinese archaic bronze tripod vessel and cover, 'ding', Eastern Zhou, Spring and Autumn periodDescription:L.: 22,5 cm - H.: 17,5 cm Provenance: The private collection of Joseph Rondina (1927-2022), antiques dealer since 1957 in New York. Don McNair writes (excerpt from The Private Collection of Joseph Rondina): 'Joseph Rondina was born into a first-generation Florentine American family in Auburn, upstate New York. He attended Auburn schools, graduated from Manlius Military Academy, and served in World War II with the U.S. Army Occupation Forces stationed in Berlin. Returning to the U.S. at the end of the war with a renewed appreciation of art and history, as well as a continental approach to decorating, he graduated from the Whitman School of Design in New York City. He opened Joseph Rondina Antiques in 1957 on East 62 Street at Madison Avenue, taking over the existing premises of Williams-Michelsen. With his instinctive eye for elegance and refinement, it was not long before his establishment was the go-to destination for European aristocracy, scions of industry, notables of the social register and cafe society from the U.S. and abroad. His interests focused primarily on European 18th century decorative arts and furniture, over time developing to include Chinese, Korean, Indian, Siamese, Cambodian, Persian and Japanese, bringing a more esoteric and exotic style to the market. With his sensitivity to changes in taste, he captured the mood of the period and knew exactly what was appropriate for the time. It would bring him enormous pleasure to see his collection enjoyed by the next set of owners. The selection of furniture and objects in this catalogue tell a story of an intensely private individual and give an insight into an extraordinary life well-lived.'Condition reports:Condition reports (unless otherwise specified above):Please contact us on info@rm-auctions.com to request a condition report. Full title: An Italian finely engraved brass dish with mythological scenes and grotesques, Venice, 16th C.Description:Dia.: 46 cm - H.: 5,5 cm Ref.: The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Accession number M.38-1946, for another example. (External link available on rm-auctions.com) The catalogue entry states: In Venice, the production of brass dishes flourished in the first half of the 16th century. They were very elaborately decorated but not with traditional European linear ornamentation. Venice, during this period, traded and fought extensively with the Turkish and Arab empires which bordered the Mediterranean basin. Thus Venetian merchants brought back to the city Near Eastern craftsmen and goods that had an immediate influence on the indigenous population, and eventually the rest of Europe. The Venetian Muslim community produced many splendid damascened brass vessels, some of which are signed in Arabic by their makers. The decoration was more extensive, often covering the entire surface of an object. The arabesque pattern, base on a stylised plant with a winding stem, was studied and copied by contemporary Italian artists. By the middle of the 16th century, the arabesque as a form of ornament was beginning to influence craftsmen all over Europe, and became incorporated into the development of European ornamental design, until the decline of the Rococo in the late 18th century. The local craftsmen adopted the deep, bold engraving characterising their Islamic prototypes but only very occasionally used the silver inlay which was a speciality of the Saracen artists. Other subject matter incorporated into the decoration of these dishes by local, as opposed to Saracenic craftsmen, was characteristic of the late Renaissance: flowers, busts, erotic scenes, grotesques, sirens, birds, battle scenes, hunting scenes, triumphal processions and incidents taken from mythology. There is often a coat of arms in the centre which implies that many of the clients were members of the aristocracy.Condition reports:Condition reports (unless otherwise specified above):Please contact us on info@rm-auctions.com to request a condition report.
