Drolling first studied painting under a smaller artist in Sélestat, but eventually moved to Paris and finished his training at the academy. His works were popular during his lifetime and many were published and popularised as engravings. A very rare Paris, Dihl et Guérhard, biscuit porcelain bust of Napoleon Bonaparte (French, 1781–ca. 1824) as First Consul, circa 1800Naturalistically modelled, the front incised BONAPARTE., on its original porcelain base imitating tortoiseshell and decorated with a classical gilt border of anthemions, 40cm high incised 'Mf de Dihl / & Guerhard'Footnotes:This extremely rare biscuit, with its original base, is probably the only representation of Bonaparte by the 'Dihl et Guérhard' manufactory to have been rendered in the form of a bust. It was undoubtedly an imperial order, particularly since the only other example that we know of is on display at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art (incomplete, without its base), accession no. 1991.209.'Dihl et Guérhard' was without a doubt the most prestigious of all the Parisian porcelain manufactories. Founded in 1781 under the Ancien Régime, the company reached its zenith under the Consulate and the Empire, before falling into decline and shutting down under the Restoration in 1823. It was renowned for its sophisticated decoration and the virtuosity of its craftsmen. From 1811 to 1813, they crafted a porcelain dinner service for the Empress Josephine that ranks among the most lavish ever made – and probably one of the most expensive as well, at the colossal price of 46,976 francs in total. Under the protection and patronage of Louis-Antoine Duc d'Angoulême Guérhard and Dihl opened a hard-paste porcelain factory, in 1781, in the Rue de Bondy. Dihl, a man of broad scientific attainments, is credited with being the first to establish a complete palette of colours that could be used for the decoration of hard-paste porcelain. This factory successfully reproduced all the underglaze coloured grounds used at Sèvres and all the colours for over-glaze painting. In addition to tableware, vases and ornaments of exquisite quality, enriched with the most elaborate decoration, a great quantity of excellent biscuit pieces were produced. In 1797 Christophe Dihl married in 1797 Antoine Guérhard's widow, and together they continued running the factory. In spite of the manufactory's triumph at the 1806 Paris International Exhibition and its important customers, the factory began to decline. In 1812 Mrs. Dihl travelled to London to try and sell several cases of porcelain, probably the 184 lots put into an auction by Christie's in 1813. The factory managed to survive, thanks to private loans, several mortgages and due to prestigious orders such as the service for Empress Joséphine (1811-1813). However, eventually the factory had to close down. Dihl died on 12 February 1830 and Madame Dihl on 10 July 1831, at the age of eighty and financially ruined. Two public sales were organized in 1830 and in 1831 and all remaining works sold. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A Trafalgar-related gold memorial ring for John Scott, 1805The gold band with black enamel dedications, inscribed 'FELL IN HIS COUNTRY'S CAUSE AT THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR OCT 21 1805 J:SCOTT ESQ:AET:41', London hallmark, ring size approx. P½Footnotes:John Scott (1764-1805) served as Purser and was Nelson's trusted principal secretary on HMS Victory, dealing with the majority of his public correspondence. He was a close friend of both Nelson and Emma Hamilton, and spent time with them at Merton Place during the summer of 1805. Scott was famously by Nelson's side at Trafalgar, stationed on the quarter deck of the Victory, when he became the first officer to be killed in the battle. Nelson took his own fatal shot whilst standing in almost the same spot an hour or so later and it is thought that the blood that can still be seen staining his uniform (now held in the National Maritime Museum) is that of Scott. A rare and large Union Jack Naval flag and pennantcirca 1810Made from bunting (loosely woven coarse wool), together with an early 19th Century navy blue frock coat with non-regulation buttons, the flag 244cm by 503cm, the pennant 190.5cm. long (3)Footnotes:Provenance:Captain Hyde John Clarke, R.N. (1777-1857) and thence by descent through the Clarke familyBorn in Jamaica in 1777, Hyde John Clark was a naval officer who saw active service against the French during the Napoleonic Wars. He entered the Royal Navy on 29 June 1791 at the age of 14 as Captain's servant on the 74-gun ship, HMS Bedford. Promoted to Midshipman in 1793, he served in the West Indies and later, after 1797, in the coastal waters off France and the North Sea where as First-Lieutenant in 1806 he was involved in the capture of two French privateers, La Henrietta and La Bellone. Following a posting to Jamaica and the East Indies, Clarke was invalided in 1807. He subsequently joined HMS Temeraire on 23 August 1810 where he was promoted to Commander in October of that year, on Trafalgar Day, serving in the Mediterranean. After resigning his Commission shortly after 1810, he retired to his family estate in Shropshire becoming the principal luminary in the township of Hyde. Following promotion to Captain in 1840, Clarke died in Shropshire in 1857 (O'Byrne's Naval Biography, 1849). By family repute this flag and pennant were thought to have been flown at the Battle of Trafalgar but as Clarke was serving in the West Indies in 1805 it is more likely that they are from the Temeraire. As he appears to have left the Navy shortly after 1810 it is more plausible that he kept this flag and pennant as souvenirs. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

After Antoine-Denis Chaudet (1763-1810): A first half 19th century bronze bust of Napoleon together with a later veined rouge marble pedestalThe bust cast after 1812, the pedestal, probably late 19th / early 20th century The sitter modelled full face, a cross belt and military ornaments to his bare chest and shoulders, on integral herm base, mid to dark brown patination, the bust, 60cm, 29cm wide, 24cm deep, the pedestal, 120cm high, 35cm wide, 30cm deep overall (2)Footnotes:Provenance:The bust formerly the property of Victor Napoleon and Princess Clementine of Belgium.Thence by descent, sold Osenat, Paris, 24 March 2013, lot 79.Acquired by the present vendor in the mid 2010's along with the marble pedestal offered with this lot.The offered bronze bust is a rare cast bronze edition of a clothed variant derived from an original plainer plaster by Chaudet, arguably depicting France's most famous and influential historical figure in the guise of a Roman dignitary. In the earlier bust, dating from 1799, Chaudet depicts Napoleon with his plain shoulders tapering to a classically inspired 'herm' form base. A marble version of this bust was completed by Chaudet in 1804 and further copies were subsequently made in quantity in Carrara marble between circa 1807 and 1809. Ordered by Napoleon's sister Elisa Baciocchi, who had been presented the principality of Lucca and Massa Carrara by her brother to be displayed in public buildings, the number of these bust made was estimated to be in the region of approximately 1200 although many of these marbles were subsequently destroyed after Napoleon's defeat. From 1805, copies of this same bust in three sizes were also famously made in Sevres biscuit porcelain. The present lot is a semi-clothed bronze variant of Napoleon featuring a cross belt and military ornaments to Napoleon's chest (as opposed to the usual plain handling of this particular portrait) and this mirrors but is not a complete copy of a fully modelled plaster bust of Napoleon, raised on a socle base also featuring a crossed belt and military ornaments by Chaudet (albeit with a different handling of the face and features) from the turn of the 19th century. This distinctive belt and ornaments were also subsequently added to later Sevres biscuit porcelain cast busts of Napoleon on their herm bases dating from circa 1811 onwards dating the manufacture of this bronze bust to no earlier than 1812.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. She was born in Switzerland and from the age of sixteen trained at the South Kensington Schools in London and in Florence at the Accademia di Belle Arti. As is evident in her sketchbooks, Butler had expressed an interest in military subjects from early in her training and, at the age of nineteen, even visited the site of the Battle of Waterloo. However, it was upon viewing the work of Jean Louis Meissonier whilst visiting Paris in 1870 that she was truly inspired by military subjects, and these became her sole focus. Butler's significant private commission of 1874, The Roll Call, signifies her break as a professional artist, as the work achieved critical praise and popular success when exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year. Impressed, Queen Victoria would go on to purchase the painting and it is still held in the Royal Collection. The Roll Call, along with most other paintings produced by her in the ensuing years, would focus on the Crimean Wars.Marriage in 1877 to Colonel William Butler would bring a great deal of fresh subjects for the artist to capture, as she was able to travel widely through the British Empire with her new husband. Significant oils relating to colonial warfare were produced during this time, perhaps most notably The Remnants of an Army: Jellalabad, January 13th, 1842 and The Defence of Rorke's Drift, January 22nd, 1879. However, her husband, having recently been honoured with a knighthood and promoted to Brigadier General, was injured at Wadi Halfa in 1886. This prompted a return to permanent residence in the UK. Butler began work on the present picture in the summer of 1893 at her home in Delgany, County Wicklow. Her aim was to create as great a sense of realism as possible. As such, in her words, '...not a thing [was] painted in the studio', and instead she relied on the warm summer evenings to prepare twilight studies. Given the rural location of the family home, Butler explains where her models came from: 'I pressed many people into my service as models, and I think I got their fine Irish faces very true to nature. I even caught an Irish Dragoon home on leave in the village, whose splendid profile I saw at once would be very telling.' It is understood that this model is the central figure in the composition's foreground. In November 1893, William Butler took command of 2nd Infantry Brigade at Aldershot where the painting was continued – the old court martial hut having been fitted with skylights was repurposed as a studio. Butler made good use of the Brigade's soldiers and her sketches produced during this time show some of the focal figures slumbering and awakening. It is here that the painting was completed and in March 1895 it went on display at the Club House, Aldershot, before being exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year. The painting shows young troopers of the 2nd Royal North British Dragoons - Scots Greys - awakening on the morning of 18th June 1815. Later that day they were to take part in the heroic charge of the Union Brigade. A charge which, at first successful, ended in terrible losses to the British. The work can therefore be seen as a commemorative piece which alludes to the ultimate sacrifice a soldier can make. Perhaps Butler's most famous painting, Scotland For Ever!, depicting the charge itself, now hangs in Leeds City Art Gallery (see fig.1).The present work represents an artist matured in their craft. It captures the stoic virtue with which Elizabeth Butler's soldiers are so often imbued, but there is a sensitivity to this work unlike others by her. In Butler's own words, it was 'never painted for the glory of war, but to portray its pathos and heroism'.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Based on a description in Baron Norvin's Histoire de Napoleon of 1828, it depicts the Emperor on 31st March, 1814, the day Paris capitulated to the invading allied armies. His mud-spattered boots and overcoat bring to mind recent events and symbolise his soiled prestige.Delaroche was one of the most famous painters of the mid-nineteenth century, with patrons throughout Europe and beyond. Although the first of his portraits of Napoleon was produced over twenty years after his exile from Europe, (and Delaroche was barely an adult at the time of Waterloo) the authenticity of his portraits was attested by people who had seen the Emperor in his prime. Nineteenth-century patrons could not believe that the artist had not actually set eyes upon his powerful model, but there is no evidence that he had.The original version of this portrait is now in the Leipzig Museum of Fine Art. A smaller version, acquired by Queen Victoria in 1846 and now in the Royal Collection Trust, hangs at Osborne House. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * TP* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
