Anacreon. Anakreontos Teiou melē [graece] Anacreontis Teii odae luce et latinitate nunc primum donatae, text in Greek and Latin, woodcut printer's device to title, printer's name scored through with ink twice on title, some browning, modern vellum-backed boards, [Adams A1001; Renouard 115; Schreiber 139], small 4to, Paris, Henri Estienne and Guillaume Morel, 1554.*** Editio princeps. The first book published by Henri Estienne the younger, and using all three sizes of the "grecs du roi" type. The work is probably actually by imitators of Anacreon and consists of the Greek text followed by Latin translation. "The Anacreontea became the most influential 'ancient' Greek poetic text during the Renaissance, and Estienne's edito princeps virtually caused a poetic revolution, not only in France, but also in Italy and Germany..." (Schreiber p.129). It also includes early printing of Sappho's poetry.

Additionally, this it seems to have been the bequest of François de La Poterie (1624-1704), former librarian of Cardinal Jules Mazarin, who is known to have generously donated to the seminary library [ink inscription to title head]. Whether the three works were already bound together at the time of this bequest, or at some later point, it is impossible to say.

This set with an attractive provenance. In the last twenty years of her life she suffered from poor health and went blind in her last years. The two parts of her Verses appear to have been first published in 1806 and 1808.

Horticulture.- Veitch (James Herbert) Hortus Veitchii. A History of the Rise and Progress of the Nurseries of Messrs. James Veitch and Sons..., Special Limited Edition, title in red and black, 50 photogravure plates, each captioned, tissue guards, original dark purple half morocco, t.e.g., others uncut, housed within original drop-back box, some faint dis-colouration and rubbing, 4to, for private circulation only, James Veitch & Sons, 1906.*** First edition, from a 'special limited edition printed for private circulation only'. The Veitch family ran the largest group of plant nurseries in Britain in the 19th century, operating from their principal nursery in Chelsea (frontispiece). James Vietch, fifth generation horticulturalist and plant collector, ran the nursery until his early death in 1907. This work includes 1,500 plants, as well as biographies of "plant hunters" working around the world in the family's employ.

Samuel Bownas (1677-1753) was a Quaker minister who travelled to America to spread the Gospel but was imprisoned on Long Island for preaching, being released after a year. The second work includes encounters with Native Americans and with Elizabeth Hanson who had been held captive with her children and whose story he later published in 1760. John Woolman (1720-72) was an American merchant, Quaker preacher, and early abolitionist during the colonial era. The final work concerns the Shakers in America.Joseph Fry (1728-87) founded the Bristol branch of the noted Quaker Fry and the family chocolate company which became J.S.Fry & Sons.
