Air Marshall Ivor Broom DSO DFC AFC 128 sqn signed 50th ann WW2 cover Operation Bodenplatte JS50/45/1. Limited edition cover numbered and certified to back, flown by the RAF with flight cachets. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1940 and eleven months later left my operational conversion unit as a sergeant pilot to join my first operational squadron, No. 114 Squadron, flying Blenheims. After 12 operations, mostly at low level against shipping off the Dutch coast, and against targets in Northern France, my crew and I were posted to the Middle East - but never reached there! On arrival at Malta we - with other transit crews - were immediately allocated to No. 105 Squadron who were on the last week of a three week detachment at Malta. We were then transferred to the remaining Blenheim Squadron at Malta, No. 107 Squadron, and stayed with them until a relief squadron arrived in January 1942. I was commissioned at Malta when 107 Squadron had lost all their officers, and for a short time was the only officer, other than the CO, in that Squadron. I completed 45 operational sorties, mostly low level attacks against shipping taking supplies to Rommel's armies in North Africa, and was awarded the DFC at the end of that tour of duty. Early in 1943, I became one of the first three Mosquito instructors in the Pathfinder Force and eventually moved into the Light Night Striking Force with No. 571 Squadron. A short term as flight commander of No. 128 Squadron was followed by promotion to acting Wing Commander to form No. 163 Squadron. I was awarded the first bar to my DFC for a low level moonlight mining attack from 50ft on the Dortmund-Ems Canal and a second bar to my DFC for tossing a 4000lb bomb into the mouth of a railway tunnel during the final German Ardennes offensive. I completed in all 103 bombing missions including 22 attacks on Berlin and at the end of World War II was awarded the DSO. Throughout my time on Mosquitos my navigator was Tommy Broom (no relation) and the "Flying Brooms" were an inseparable combination. Good Condition. Capt Vivian Gunton. Concorde signed 12 x 8 colour photo. Captain Vivian Gunton started flying in 1958 with an RAF Flying Scholarship - on a Tiger Moth - at a grass aerodrome called Fairoaks. On leaving school he took one of the 42 places offered at the College of Air Training, Hamble, when it opened in 1960. After graduating from the College in 1962, Viv joined British European Airways and spent 8 years flying around Europe and the UK, first on the Vanguard then flying Tridents which were at that time the fastest civil passenger aeroplanes in the world. He returned to London to fly the Trident again, and with the demise of the Trident in late 1985, Viv needed to find something faster to fly and so became a Concorde Captain. He flew Concorde for 11 years until he retired in September 1996. He subsequently spent two years, part time, flying a King-Air for Cega Air Ambulance. Viv lives with his wife in Odiham. Brig Chuck Yeager signed 1983 Test Pilot tribute cover. Brigadier General Charles Elwood Yeager ( February 13, 1923 - December 7, 2020) was a United States Air Force officer, flying ace, and record-setting test pilot who in October 1947 became the first pilot in history confirmed to have exceeded the speed of sound in level flight. Yeager was raised in Hamlin, West Virginia. His career began in World War II as a private in the United States Army, assigned to the Army Air Forces in 1941.[a] After serving as an aircraft mechanic, in September 1942, he entered enlisted pilot training and upon graduation was promoted to the rank of flight officer (the World War II Army Air Force version of the Army's warrant officer), later achieving most of his aerial victories as a P-51 Mustang fighter pilot on the Western Front, where he was credited with shooting down 11.5 enemy aircraft (the half credit is from a second pilot assisting him in a single shootdown). On October 12, 1944, he attained "ace in a day" status, shooting down five enemy aircraft in one mission. After the war, Yeager became a test pilot and flew many types of aircraft, including experimental rocket-powered aircraft for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). Through the NACA program, he became the first human to officially break the sound barrier on October 14, 1947, when he flew the experimental Bell X-1 at Mach 1 at an altitude of 45,000 ft (13,700 m), for which he won both the Collier and Mackay trophies in 1948. He then went on to break several other speed and altitude records in the following years. In 1962, he became the first commandant of the USAF Aerospace Research Pilot School, which trained and produced astronauts for NASA and the Air Force. Yeager later commanded fighter squadrons and wings in Germany, as well as in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. In recognition of his achievements and the outstanding performance ratings of those units, he was promoted to brigadier general in 1969 and inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1973, retiring on March 1, 1975. His three-war active-duty flying career spanned more than 30 years and took him to many parts of the world, including the Korean War zone and the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. Yeager is referred to by many as one of the greatest pilots of all time, and was ranked fifth on Flying's list of the 51 Heroes of Aviation in 2013. Throughout his life, he flew more than 360 different types of aircraft over a 70-year period, and continued to fly for two decades after retirement as a consultant pilot for the United States Air Force. WW2 ace Flt Lt Sergeant Bronislaw Malinowski of No.501 Squadron SIGNED BATTLE OF BRITAIN 31st ANNIVERSARY COVER, Rare only 242 were signed. In 1929 he joined 6 Aviation Regiment in Lviv and was sent the following year to the flying school at Bydgoszcz with further training at Grudziadz . He then he served as a fighter pilot in the 3rd Aviation Regiment in Poznan. In 1934 he was posted as an instructor to the Aviation Academy at Deblin and was still there in September 1939. He flew with the scratch detachment of instructors defending Deblin in obsolete PZL P7 aircraft before escaping via Romania, Yugoslavia and Greece to France. Malinowski was posted to a ferry unit on 13th May 1940 but with the deteriorating situation he flew on 23rd June from Marseilles to Casablanca in a twin-engine LeO 451. He then went by ship via Gibraltar to England, arriving on 13th July 1940. He was sent to the Polish Wing at 3 School of Technical Training Blackpool, to await a posting. Malinowski was posted to 307 Squadron at Kirton-in-Lindsey on 10th September. The squadron was intended to be the first Polish night-fighter squadron but training ceased when the pilots were posted away to fill gaps at day-fighter squadrons. Malinowski went to No. 1 School of Army Co-operation Old Sarum for the 8th Polish Pilots Course from 9th to 16th October 1940 for testing and grading. He then went to 5 OTU Aston Down, converted to Hurricanes and joined 43 Squadron at Unsworth on 25th October 1940. On the 31st he was flying with Green section of 43 Squadron which was vectored to investigate an X-raid over the sea. His engine started misfiring but he was able to reach land and make a forced landing near Havelow Farm at Chirnside, west of Berwick. In early December he was posted to 501 Squadron at Kenley. On 11th April 1941 he joined 302 Squadron at Westhampnett. Malinowski probably destroyed a Me109 on 30th December 1941. He was awarded the KW (gazetted 20th February 1942) and with his tour completed he went to 58 OTU Grangemouth on 6th May as an instructor. Malinowski returned to 302 Squadron, then at Heston, on 10th November 1942. He went to West Kirby on 13th February 1943 to prepare for overseas service and on 13th March he arrived in the Middle East in a C-47 with other Polish pilots to form the Polish Fighting Team, otherwise known as Skalski's Circus. They were attached to 145 Squadron and operated in the Western Desert from 17th March to 12th May and destroyed 30 enemy aircraft. Malinowski destroyed a Me109 on 7th April. Back in the UK, he rejoined 302 Squadron on 22nd July 1943. Over France on 8th September he destroyed two Me109's but his Spitfire V AA928/WX-U was shot down with Malinowski receiving leg injuries. He evaded capture and with assistance from the local resistance he was hidden in the morgue of the hospital at Ypres where he underwent surgery for his wounds. The resistance passed him to Spain and on 13th December 1943 he returned to Britain and 302 Squadron. MI9 Report no 3317/1640. Despite injuries (shrapnel in his right leg and burns after the oxygen tank explosion) he managed to get himself out of the plane. He found hidden in a nearby vineyard, whose owner accidentally found Malinowski began to provide him with water and food. The pilot waited for the raid, and on the fifth day he was contacted by Belgian, who arranged for him to transport to another farm. The doctor was also invited to take care of the wounded. Because of the inability to remove leg shards, Malinowski was taken to a hospital run by a nurse at Ypres, however, due to the presence of a German hospital wounded soldiers were placed in a hospital morgue. There, without anaesthesia, he had undergone surgery to remove the debris and waited until his condition improved enough to leave the hospital. After about three weeks, he was taken by two men to Langemark where he received a false identity card and then taken to Liege. There, two other Belgians were contacted by him, who contacted him with resistance. The underground organized for him a trip to Spain - Malinowski performed as a veterinarian, which was a good disguise for horses and cattle epidemics. Traveling through Brussels and Paris successfully reached the border and after crossing the Pyrenees he found himself in Spain. After further journeys, he checked in at the British embassy in Madrid, where he had no trouble leaving for Gibraltar by car, arriving in England on December 23, 1943, arriving at Portreath. He was awarded two Bars to the KW (gazetted 20th December 1943). On 25th March 1944 Malinowski went to No. 1 ADU Croydon, returning to 302 Squadron, then at Chailey, on 29th June. He was awarded the DFC (gazetted 25th September 1944), the VM (5th Class) (gazetted 25th September 1944) and a third Bar to the KW (gazetted 30th December 1944) and the C de G (Fr). 30 July 1944, during the bombing of German groupings in the area of Falaise's boiler, his Spitfire MJ359 was hit by anti-aircraft artillery fire. Malinowski tried to pull the sliding line to the Allied line, but he did not have enough height and had to land in the field, no man's land. At landing, he intentionally hooked his wing to the tree to brake the plane and avoid breaking up. At the touchdown, the engine was dented deep into the cockpit, and both pilot legs were broken and jammed in the wreck. Spitfire Malinowski pulled out and took Canadian tanks to the field hospital. Later he was transported to a hospital in England, where he spent many months following treatment and rehabilitation. He joined 133 Wing on the Continent on 18th March 1945. He was commissioned from Warrant Officer in June 1945 and was released from the Polish Air Force in January 1947 as a Flight Lieutenant. Good Condition. WW2 Dambuster Raid veteran G L Johnson 617 sqn bomb Aimer signed 12x8 photo. Selected to be part of the specialist No. 617 Squadron RAF, Johnson arrived at RAF Scampton on 27 March 1943. It was at this time that he was due to marry; however, due to the requirements of the training for Operation Chastise, all leave had been cancelled. Johnson appealed to his new Commanding Officer, Wing Commander Guy Gibson, who eventually relented, giving Johnson four days' leave. McCarthy's crew in Lancaster AJ-T (T-Tommy) were detailed to attack the Sorpe Dam, the structure of which differed considerably from the other main targets insofar as it being an earthen dam as opposed to the gravity construction of the Mohne and Eder dams, thus necessitating a completely different type of attack. Like the rest of No. 617 Squadron, Johnson had practised dropping his bomb as the aircraft flew straight towards the target at low level. However, on the afternoon prior to the raid, when the five crews detailed to attack the Sorpe Dam received their briefing, they were told that they had to fly along the dam wall and drop their mine at its centre. It would roll down the wall and explode when it reached the correct depth. The specialist bomb sight developed for the raid would also be of no use. Due to various losses and technical issues en route to the target, AJ-T was the first Lancaster to reach the Sorpe, and McCarthy soon realised how difficult the attack would be. Although there were no flak batteries, the attack would require the aircraft to be flown low across the nearby town of Langscheid, with its prominent church steeple, followed by the aircraft having to drop even lower so the bomb could be released. It was not until the tenth attempt that the crew were satisfied, with Johnson finally releasing the bomb. For his part in the raid, Johnson received the Distinguished Flying Medal. Along with other members of the squadron, he received his medal in an investiture at Buckingham Palace. Good Condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. WW2 D-Day veteran Lt Col Maureen Gara Royal Nursing Corps signed 2004 60th ann D-Day cover dedicated to her. Scarce. Nice matching illustration and St Vincent The Grenadines Stamp and Kingstown postmark. Lt Col Maureen Gara RRC QARANC (1916-2009) trained at Bury Infirmary in 1936 and joined the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service in 1943. She was posted to 79th General Hospital and began training for Normandy. In mid-June 1944 they embarked for Normandy and spent the first night in the trenches before arriving at the 600-bed 79th General Hospital at 10am the next day. The tents for the hospital had already been erected so they did not have much to do to get it ready for their first casualties who began arriving later that afternoon and continued to do through the night. They eventually dealt with 400 casualties on their first day. The Bayeux area was called Harley Street and became a massive complex of field hospitals. There was an airstrip nearby and an efficient evacuation system was effect. Blood supplies arrived on a daily basis and in a few days they were joined by another 600-bed hospital so they alternated admissions and evacuation which gave a day to reorganise. The 79th General Hospital remained in Bayeux as the Allied armies advanced to Paris but in September it packed up and moved to Holland to continue its work there. Good Condition.
