Lot 6077

Alexander Trocchi: 'Cain's Book', London, John Calder, 1963, 1st UK edition, signed and inscribed on FFEP, original cloth gilt, dust wrapper (25s price intact). Controversial novel about heroin addiction by the Scottish beat writer Alexander Trocchi. A roman à clef, it details the life of Joe Necchi, a heroin addict and writer, who is living and working on a scow (cargo boat) on the Hudson River in New York. The book alternates between Necchi/Trocchi's attempts to score and flashbacks to his experiences as a child in Glasgow, and later as a young man in London and Paris. It is also an account of what it means to be a junky and an outsider from society. It describes with an eye for detail the rituals of heroin, the cooking up and the search for a suitable vein, in a visceral way that surpasses even William Burroughs. In April 1964 the UK edition went to trial for obscenity, with six defense witnesses testifying to its literary value. The case is notable in that the court's judgement was the first in the UK to condemn a book for obscenity not for sexual content but for "the lifestyle it advocated." In response to the unfavorable verdict Trocchi held a public burning of his book, with fireworks. In the 1950's Trocchi was a prominent member of the avant garde Paris literary scene, establishing the influential and now highly collectible Merlin magazine, which ran for five years and 11 issues, publishing many of the last great names of Modernism. 'Cain's Book' was his last great work, after which Trocchi lost his powers of productivity and lived the life of a refractory addict. John Calder, the publisher of Cain's Book wrote, "he is … a lost writer … lost because of heroin. I've known many drug addicts, [and] I've known nobody who was able to cope with it as well as Trocchi, but it killed his talent..."

BANKSY (BRITISH, b. 1974-), PAIR OF CUT & RUN EXHIBITION POSTERS, 2023 pair of posters from the 2023 Banksy Cut & Run Exhibition, purchased from Glasgow's Gallery of Modern Art at the time of the exhibition, new, unframed and still in original wrapper (images are just for reference)The anonymous graffiti artist known as Banksy is perhaps the most controversial street artist of today. He is famous for his stenciled graffiti works, which appear in public spaces around the world. His use of stenciling developed from a need to complete a work quickly, namely to avoid being caught vandalizing by police. Between 15th June and 28th August 2023 at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow he held his first show in 14 years: Cut & Run featuring stencils and more from his career on the street. “I’ve kept these stencils hidden away for years, mindful they could be used as evidence in a charge of criminal damage. But that moment seems to have passed, so now I’m exhibiting them in a gallery as works of art. I’m not sure which is the greater crime” each poster approximately 42cm x 30cm

David Leverett, British 1938-2020 - Untitled; oil on canvas, 153 x 182.7 cm (unframed) (ARR) Note: Leverett's work encapsulates the energy and innovation of the British art scene in the 1960s, alongside his contemporaries John Hoyland, Jeremy Moon and Bridget Riley. Leverett was known for his large-scale and often irregularly-shaped abstract works executed in bright acrylics, which burst with vibrancy and dynamism. The pieces on offer exhibit these qualities clearly and powerfully, and are therefore wonderful examples of Leverett’s signature style. Leverett studied at the Nottingham College of Art in 1957-61, followed by the Royal Academy Schools in 1961-64. In 1966 he had the first of many shows at the Redfern Gallery in London. He was a Visiting Artist at the Royal Academy Schools, the Royal College of Art and Hornsey College of Art, London. He also taught at many different schools, including printmaking at the Slade School of Fine Art. His work is held in public collections including the Arts Council, the Tate Galleries and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Maya Angelou was a big supporter of his work, even writing the introductory essay for one of his catalogues.

The artist and her husband John Houston were highly influenced by their travels in Japan in the 1980s, and in particular for Blackadder, the Zen principles of empty space, seen here in the way the still life objects are carefully placed across the white of the blank paper. Blackadder allowed this empty space to become an active element in her work, creating a distinct style and feeling. Blackadder was the first woman to be elected as an academician to the Royal Academy in London and the Royal Scottish Academy. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is now held in all major public UK collections, including the Tate, National Galleries of Scotland and the Government Art Collection.
