Attributed to Sir Godfrey KnellerOil on canvasPortrait of Colonel Herbert Jeffreys - Governor of Virginia in the reign of Charles II, seated half-length, label verso, 76cm x 73cm (unframed); and a hand-written Commission - 'To Our Trusted and Welbeloved Herbert Jeffreys Esq. Lieutenant Governor of Our Colony and Plantation of Virginia', signed by Charles II, contained in a crimson velvet-lined glazed frame; and additional Jeffreys Family material including a miniature and silhouette Provenance by Family descent Historical and Biographical Note:- The first Governor of Virginia was one Sir William Berkeley who took up his position in 1642 when it was a frontier society. Under his administration the first generation of Virginian 'aristocracy' came into existence before the end of the English Civil War and the colony was the last to relinquish it's allegiance to Charles I, and first to proclaim it's allegiance to Charles II. Berkeley's reign as Governor finally ended in 1676 with Bacon's Rebellion. Nathaniel Bacon Junior and his men marched on Jamestown and captured the colonial capital, forcing the Governor to flee. Bacon subsequently succumbed to the disease known as 'bloody flux' and died the same year.A royal inquiry led by Colonel Herbert Jeffreys (the subject of this painting), who arrived with a thousand British troops too late to deal with the rebellion, caused Berkeley to return to England to protest his lack of involvement in Bacon's uprising. Upon his departure Colonel Jeffreys declared himself Governor of Virginia.
