An interesting large format "visitors book", headed "Deutscher Luftsport Verband", commemorating the first German Aviation Minister "Herrn Ministerprasidenten Goring", the German Airport Organisations of the Deutscher Luftsport Verband and fliers of the German youth, dated Berlin July 1933, and containing facsimile signatures of Hindenburg, Hitler, Goering, Milch, and several others, and three pages with individual ink inscriptions and signatures dated April 1934, the remaining pages blank, leather bound, the cover gold embossed with the DLV emblem and "Forderer des Deutschen Luftsportes", with brown paper dust jacket, 12" x 15". A most interesting family grouping: Defence Medal (un-named as issued) VF (slight edge bump), with a named card to Miss O. Belchamber, a member of a fire fighting party recognised by Willesden Borough Council, with a named incident/registration slip giving next of kin details, an ARP No 25 duplicated Air Raid Warning instructions leaflet, Miss Belchamber's slip showing her Defence Medal entitlement; and a written note from T. Belchamber KRRC stating the following: "In the First World War, to be precise in September 1915, I was in the trenches, serving the Second Division on the Western Front. We were at Givenchy on the La Bassee sector, facing Lille.....a shell came over and a small piece of shrapnel hit me in the back....". He was unhurt and later took the shrapnel to a jeweller who polished it and made it into a brooch for one of his sisters the above mentioned Miss Belchamber. Zao Wou-Ki 赵无极 (1925 - 2013) Untitled abstract - 1962 Oil on canvas Signed and dated Measures approx. 80cm x 120cm Provenance: from a private Somerset collection. Born in Beijing in 1920, Zao Wou-Ki is a modern Chinese-French painter affiliated with Lyrical Abstraction. His early interest in art was largely encouraged by his family. At 15, Zao attended the School of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, where he received formal art training under Lin Fengmian, a highly regarded pioneer of modern Chinese painting who was also a mentor for the artist Chu Teh-Chun. During these formative years, Zao painted predominantly figurative works and idolised modern Western masters. In 1948, Zao moved to Paris with his first wife Lalan to embark on a new artistic journey. Settling down in the creative district of Montparnasse, Zao befriended artists such as Alberto Giacometti and Joan Miró, and spent many afternoons in the Louvre. There in Paris, Zao worked alongside fellows of the École de Paris to reclaim the power of abstraction amidst the rising post-war criticism of the style. He also met abstract painters including Jean-Paul Riopelle, Joan Mitchell and Pierre Soulages, who would become a lifelong friend. Zao travelled frequently in the late 1950s, particularly to New York where he met Abstract Expressionists including Franz Kline, Barnett Newman and Adolph Gottlieb. The visceral expression of the New York School was impactful for Zao. He developed a more gestural, expressive style on larger canvases over the next two decades, which would come to be defined as his ‘Hurricane Period’ — an apex of his career. In May 2022, Zao's colossal painting 29.09.64. (1964) sold for $35,414,464 at Christie’s. Depicting the speed and energy of a surreal landscape in diverse shades of blue with explosive lines, the work is emblematic of this period. In 1982, the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais in Paris was the first French museum to hold a solo exhibition of Zao, 20 years before he was elected to the French Academy of Fine Arts. His first museum retrospective in the United States, No Limits: Zao Wou-Ki, opened at the Asia Society in New York in September 2016, three years after his death in 2013. A true ‘transnational’ artist, Zao’s works are housed in public collections in more than 20 countries.
WWI First World War - an early 20th century WW1 era rag type doll in the form of an RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps) female soldier. Dressed in full uniform, including a miniature cap badge, leather straps, leather shoes, a necktie, and other decorative features. Stitched face with blue eyes and red lips, and a small tuft of blonde hair poking beneath the cap. Measures approx: 40cm tall.
