A Victorian novelty silver gorilla pepper pot, by Thomas, William, Henry and Louis Dee, London 1861, modelled as a seated gorilla holding a bent rifle, the pierced pull-off head with glass eyes, height 12.5cm, approx. weight 8.5oz. This design may be based a story relating to Paul du Chaillu (1837-1903) an American 19th century explorer, who, in 1856 spent three and a half years exploring a large section of the Gabon coast. On his return to New York he wrote the story of his discoveries; 'Explorations and Adventures in Equatorial Africa; with accounts of the manners and customs of the people, and of the chase of the gorilla, crocodile, leopard, elephant, hippopotamus and other animals', published by Harper Bros in 1861. He had been the first white man to see and hunt a gorilla. One story told was of a hunting expedition and a 'Killer Gorilla'. Du Chaillu was out with a group of natives, they split in different directions and after a while he heard the "tremendous roar of the gorilla…. instinctively we made for the spot…. the poor brave fellow who had gone off alone was lying on the ground in a pool of his own blood…beside him lay his gun, the stock broken, and the barrel bent almost double. In one place it was flattened, and it bore plainly the marks of the gorilla's teeth.....this huge gorilla thought the gun was his enemy, so he had seized it and dashed it on the ground...not satisfied, had taken it up again and given it a tremendous bite…" For a similar three-piece set, see Bonhams, Fine Silver and Objects of Vertu, 2 July 2008, lot 211.

Bonhams footnote reads; 'Though unmarked, the present lot has been declared by the Antique Plate Committee at Goldsmiths' Hall to be: "a genuine high quality item dating from around the time of the one in the collection, which was made in 1761." The post of Bargemaster within a Livery Company has its origins in the 15th century with processions of boats along the Thames. The City Livery companies revelled in the waterborne pageantry, it asserted their importance and civic pride and the focus was Lord Mayor's Day. The Brewer's Company records in 1422: 'That William Walderne was chosen Mayor of St Edmunds Day, when it was ordered that the Aldermen and Craft should go to Westminster with him to take his charge, in barges without minstrels. By the 16th century, the precedence of the Companies was carefully regulated. First was The Lord Mayor's Barge, followed by the barge of his own company. Then followed the other companies in the traditional order: Mercers, Grocers, Drapers, Fishmongers, Goldsmiths, Skinners, Merchant Taylors, Haberdashers, Salters, Ironmongers, Vintners and Clothworkers. In the 17th centuries the Livery Companies built their own barges and painted them with the companies' emblems and insignia. The bargemaster was an important personage not only in the companies but also in royal and noble households.'

A Victorian silver and enamel vesta case, by John Banks, Chester 1900, rectangular form, the hinged cover with a ring attachment, the front enamelled '1881 MAJUBA, wiped-out 1900', length 4.5cm, approx. weight 1oz. During the Second Anglo-Boer War, "Remember Majuba" was a rallying cry of British soldiers. It referred to the British defeat at Battle of Majuba Hill on 27th February 1881 during the First Anglo-Boer War. Exactly 19 years later, on 27th February 1900, General Piet Cronjι and 4,000 of his men surrendered after the British victory at the Battle of Paardeberg. In the jingoistic poem, The Absent-Minded Beggar, by Rudyard Kipling, there is a line which reads: "He is out on active service, wiping something off a slate". Hence the wording on the vesta: "MAJUBA WIPED OUT" signifies the restoration of British pride. Reference: www.southAfricanmedals.com.
