Dennis ENDEAN IVALL (1921-2006) Two maritime watercolours, local interest Each signed 25cm x 35cm Dennis Endean Ivall was born in Essex in 1921, the youngest of four children. His father was then an accountant with ICI and his mother was a member of the Endean family of St. Agnes, so he visited Cornwall for holidays from an early age. He attended the Sir George Monoux Grammar School in Chingford, and then joined ICI. In the Second World War he enlisted in the Ordnance Corps, seeing active service in the retreat from Burma, and later in Ceylon and the Cocos Islands, where he reached the rank of Warrant Officer, First Class. After the war he trained as an artist and art teacher. Working at first as a freelance artist, he later became an art teacher in Barnstaple, North Devon – the nearest to Cornwall that he could get at the time. In 1973, Dennis took early retirement and moved to Cornwall, living at first at Ponsanooth and then for thirty years at Perranwell. He worked as a designer, a record agent and principally as a heraldic artist and designer, only retiring from this work when suffering from illness in the last three years of his life. Heraldic art was his great passion, and he carried out the design and painting of coats of arms for many clients across the world. He was the author of the book Cornish Heraldry and Symbolism and, among the work he carried out in Cornwall, was the painting of the organ panels at Cuby church, the repainting of the coat of arms at St.Dennis after the fire and the design and painting of a banner for St.Agnes and, of course, the banner of St. Piran in this church. Heraldry and his military service gave rise to an interest in army insignia and badges and, with Professor Charles Thomas, he was the author and illustrator of Military Insignia of Cornwall. He was a founder member of the Cornwall Militaria Group, and a long serving member of the Perranarworthal branch of the British Legion. His enthusiasm for heraldry led Dennis to join the Order of St.Lazarus, an international charitable order founded in the Holy Land. He was a member of the Commandery of Avalon in the West Country, and became Judge of Arms of the Commandery, of the Bailiwick of England and then of the whole order worldwide, attaining the rank of Knight Grand Cross. Although he was such a talented artist, with a worldwide clientele, he was always ready to lend his talents to local activities, whether painting scenery for Carnon Downs Drama Group, drawing posters for the Women’s Institute or touching up the lettering on the war memorial.

The Great Train Robbery - Ronnie Biggs: The Inside Story - Author's presentation first edition hardcover book, No. 13/20. Signed to the frontis by Ronnie Biggs (1929-2013) and author Mike Gray and Tel Currie. A personal photograph of Biggs with the book in hospital is laid-in to the inner cover. The Great Train Robbery was the robbery of £2.6 million from a Royal Mail train heading from Glasgow to London on the West Coast Main Line in the early hours of 8 August 1963, at Bridego Railway Bridge, Ledburn, near Mentmore in Buckinghamshire, England. After tampering with the lineside signals in order to bring the train to a halt, a gang of fifteen, led by Bruce Reynolds, attacked the train. Other gang members included Gordon Goody, Buster Edwards, Charlie Wilson, Roy James, John Daly, Danny Pembroke, Jimmy White, Ronnie Biggs, Tommy Wisbey, Jim Hussey, Bob Welch and Roger Cordrey, as well as three men known only as numbers "1", "2" and "3". A 16th man, an unnamed retired train driver, was also present. With careful planning based on inside information from an individual known as "The Ulsterman" (erroneously named as Patrick McKenna in 2014), the robbers escaped with over £2.6 million (equivalent to £53.5 million today). The bulk of the stolen money was never recovered. Though the gang did not use any firearms, Jack Mills, the train driver, was beaten over the head with a metal bar. Mills' injuries were severe enough to end his career. After the robbery, the gang hid at Leatherslade Farm and famously used the money in a game of Monopoly - unwittingly incriminating themselves whilst doing so as the Monopoly set was used to garner finger prints of the suspects and was instrumental in the Police arresting most of the gang. The ringleaders were sentenced to 30 years in jail.

Spanish school, first half of the 17th century."Saint Barbara".Carved and polychrome wood.Sculpture-reliquary.Faults in the wood and in the polychromy.Measurements: 48 x 20 x 12 cm.Spanish carving from the Baroque period. Worked in rounded bulk, the hollow present in its chest shows that it was used as a reliquary. The tower that the young woman holds in her left hand is enough to identify her as Saint Barbara. Depicted with her hair wavy and uncovered, unveiled, as befits her virgin status, the saint wears a long tunic, tight at the waist, which falls in naturalistic folds. By adopting a slight contrapposto, the bent knee brings out the drapery around her right leg. A second garment, the cloak, is also adapted to her harmonious waistline. The symmetry of her features harmonises with the serenity of her attitude. The carving is naturalistic but in this case does not seek any kind of dramatic effect.Compiled late in the 10th century and popularised in the West in the 13th century by the Golden Legend, the legend of Saint Barbara tells that she was the daughter of the satrap Dióscuro who, in order to keep her from Christian proselytism, locked her in an open tower with only two windows, piercing a third one herself in allusion to the Holy Trinity. However, Barbara was taught by a priest posing as a doctor, and to express her faith in the Trinity she pierced a third window in the wall. She managed to flee but was captured by her father, and when she refused to abjure Christianity and marry a pagan she was handed over to the judge Marcian, who tortured her in various ways. She was stretched on a rack and flogged, torn with iron combs, rolled on pottery shards and burned with red-hot irons, and finally the executioners tore out her breasts with pincers. Finally, her father beheaded her. Saint Barbara's patron saints are widespread; she was considered to be a protector against lightning because her father, after killing her, was struck by lightning. Her name was also often inscribed on church bells, which were rung during storms. Her attributes are the palm of martyrdom and the crown, due to her royal origin, and the tower with three windows. It can also be accompanied by a peacock feather, a chalice topped with a host, a cannon or a cannonball, given that it became the patron saint of artillerymen in the 15th century for its protection against lightning and bad death.
Spanish school, late 19th century."Vapor Viatán".Watercolour on paper.Titled in the lower margin.Moisture stains. Defects.Measurements: 49 x 63 cm.; 60 x 76 cm.(frame).The first transatlantic liners were popularly known by the name of "Leviathan", so it is possible that the author of this drawing playfully changed the name of this type of vessel that began to be seen between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Thus, he renames it "Viatan" in a drawing in which he tries to subtract the mastodonic aspect of the original, giving it a more inoffensive and playful appearance.
JUAN DONATO (first half of the 19th century)."The Sovereign", 1845.Watercolour on paper.Signed and dated in the lower corner.Dirt. Moisture stains.Measurements: 58 x 66 cm; 67 x 75 cm (frame).Watercolour resolved with a precise stroke, similar to the nineteenth-century representations of warships, within the genre of nautical painting, a valuable genre for documenting naval history from an artistic and technical point of view. The Soberano was a ship of the line of the Spanish Royal Navy, built at the Esteiro Royal Shipyard in Ferrol. In March 1759, under the command of Captain Isidoro de Postigo, it was commissioned in company with the frigate Juno to engage in privateering off the coast between Cartagena and the Strait of Gibraltar. In the context of the Seven Years' War, on 14 April 1761 it left Cadiz for Havana with the squadron commanded by the squadron commander Gutierre de Hevia, Marquis of Real Transporte.
Olotine double bed, XVIII century.Carved and polychrome wood. The bed is complete. The painting needs to be restored. Wear and tear due to use and the passage of time.Measurements: 152 x 156 cm (headboard). The Olot bed is a typical type of Catalan furniture from the second quarter of the 18th century. The bed in question, consisting of a complete upright structure and headboard, is a clear representative of this typology. The headboard is beautifully polychromed, depicting a vase framed in a border, surrounded by borders in geometric shapes and borders of flowers in gilt and bright colours to enhance the scene. In Spain in the 18th century, the European type of bed was adopted. New production centres appeared, the main ones being located in Olot, Vic, Valencia and Mallorca. They are known today as Olot beds and are characterised by their large headboards, generally more or less pyramidal in shape, which were stuccoed and painted. Those from the first half of the century are simple, and later the cabriole leg appeared, extending upwards to form half-height posts, also in cabriole. The headboard of these beds usually stood alone, and was fixed directly to the wall. It was made of soft woods such as white or black poplar and birch. In the early days they were polychromed in a single colour or marbled, and the profiles were gilded; in the second quarter of the 18th century, religious images appeared, set in a reserve of wavy contours. In the last quarter of the century, the legs and posts were turned and the decorative motifs depicted on the headpieces became courtly, and the profiles became lighter with rococo motifs.

Pair of single beds olotinas, XVIII century.Carved and polychrome wood. The beds are complete. The polychromy is damaged. Wear and tear due to use and the passage of time.Measurements: 157 x 108 cm (each headboard). The Olot bed is a typical type of Catalan furniture from the second quarter of the 18th century. The pair of complete beds in question, made up of the complete upright structure and the headboards, are a clear representative of this typology. Both headboards are beautifully polychromed, with central tondos decorated with Immaculate Conception. They follow Renaissance aesthetics in that they are governed by the order and balance of each of their parts. The marbled polychromy of the base is also noteworthy.

Alexandre Nikolayevich Benois (1870-1960), Costume design for Nutcracker: 'Danse Orientale, Le Cafe I' with annotations, 1952, Black ink and watercolour over pencil, Signed 'Alexandre Benois' and dated '1952', 23cm x 15cm, (ARR) Provenance Arthur Tooth & Sons Ltd, London Footnote For similar design see Victoria & Albert Museum 'Design for the Nutcracker, in Nutcracker' by Alexandre Benois dated 1957. This drawing was made for the production of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker first performed on 24 December by the Festival Ballet at the Royal Festival Hall, London. Alexandre Nikolayevich Benois was a significant figure in the Russian artistic scene of the early 20th century, working alongside Sergei Diaghilev and Leon Bakst to produce the magazine Mir iskusstva and its corresponding artistic movement, which sought to promote Art Nouveau within Russia. Yet it was as a designer for the Ballet Russes, under Diaghilev, for which Benois is probably best known. The present pieces, as costume designs, are therefore particularly compelling, serving as examples of Benois's most recognisable work. This work is in wooden gilded frame with a cream mount, there is some paint loss and scuff marks to the frame. The piece has not been examined out of the frame, it may or may not be stuck down. It is evident the page is creased in areas and there are marks to the surface. The page is slightly yellowed, which is what one would expect with a piece of this age. Overall this piece is in good condition.
