POSSIBLE DARWIN INTEREST: AN OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING OF A GENTLEMAN BESIDES A MAP LABELLED 'DEL FUEGO', The seated gentleman is depicted in fine dress holding a propelling pencil, with his left arm resting on a map. The map is partially unfolded to reveal the words 'America' and 'El Fuego', which can be assumed to refer to 'Tierra Del Fuego', an Archipelago off South America. Mounted in a large gilt wood frame. Tierra Del Fuego was first discovered by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan while sailing for the Spanish Crown in 1520. On his first voyage with HMS Beagle in 1830, Robert FitzRoy picked up four native Fuegians, including "Jemmy Button" (Orundellico) and Yokcushlu, and brought them to England. The three who survived the voyage were taken to London to meet the king and queen and were, for a time, celebrities. They returned to Tierra del Fuego in the Beagle with FitzRoy and Charles Darwin, who made extensive notes about his visit to the islands. The gentleman could indeed be a cartographer, and it is not implausible to suggest that he may have been on HMS Beagle, or have had some involvement with the 1830's exploration of Tierra Del Fuego. 87cm x 67cm Framed 102cm x 90cm

All requisite issue points present: the title page gives the author as 'J. A Rowling'; the copyright page states 'Joanne Rowling'; full number line, '10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1'; '1 wand' appears twice in the list on p. 53. Internally very well-preserved with organic, creamy toning to the pages, the edges of text-block with a few pale marks, a few page-corners with light fold-lines, card wrappers with some light handling marks and a few faint surface scuffs, one heavier scuff at front-edge of spine, the wrappers appearing untidily bound (which is in keeping with the uncorrected proofs), shelf-lean, the extreme corners faintly rubbed, some very light creasing to corners. Lacking the title only, otherwise textually complete and conforming to the collation of a first edition: pp. [14] (i.e. the presence of a title would've made this 16), iii, 4-65, 68-135, 138-166, all signatures following on correctly and without any loss of text. The book begins with subscribers & contents, A1 commencing at 'To the Reader'. Without O2, as per a true first issue. Interestingly, this copy has been bound with additional blank leaves throughout, 54 sides of which have been utilised for manuscript recipes in various early hands. This, therefore, is not only a first issue of one of the most important early cookery books in English, but also a unique collection of early handwritten recipes for dishes such as 'Vermicelly Soop', 'Oyster Pye', 'Turbot in Jelly', 'Patigonian Cucumber', and 'Green Grape Wine', as well as how to pot & pickle birds including curlews, wheatears and sparrows. The laid paper of these additional leaves includes watermarks depicting both a Royal Coat of Arms and a 'GR' cypher [George II or George III]. All pages (published & otherwise) are numbered in an early hand, amounting to 336. Contents generally well-preserved with occasional creasing & marks, a few marginal tears, a few leaves with foxing, the contemporary binding worn & lacking calf, the upper board detached. A unique copy of the most renowned English cookery book of the eighteenth century
