The substantial volume includes nearly 700 images (including hundreds in four color) as well as descriptions of Muyaes’s work and is the most complete account of her artistic career to date. In its 396 pages it showcases her figurative and expressionistic work as it has unfolded over the past five decades. The different sections highlight her methods and materials and the role and function they play in her work. The numerous full-color reproductions are both elegant and sensuous, emphasizing her freedom of expression through color. The book also includes an introduction, a conservation essay, and five thematic essays, each focusing on different aspects in the development of her work. Muyaes’s work is about life and creation but has a conceptual range from fantasy to reality. Her mixed ancestry - Mexican and Lebanese - helped to provide a rich source of subject matter and influences. Her language of forms is infused so deeply with her ethnicity that it is presented in a profoundly personal way. Her father was an anthropologist, collector, antiquarian, and artist who became a great influence on her as well as providing a rich legacy. Book and images copyright © 2023 Karima Muyaes. In the late 1940s and early 1950s he lived in Cornwall where he met Ben Nicholson and William Scott in St Ives. He was also a close associate of both Victor Pasmore and Anthony Hill. Heath became the main link between the emerging St Ives School in Cornwall and the British Constructivists based in London. He helped to organise the first post-war show of abstract art at the Artists International Association Gallery in 1951, wrote on the origin and meaning of Abstract Art, and became the AIA's chairman (1954-1964). She encouraged me to make films, make more far-out music, gallery exhibitions, make more of the art I was doing privately. Anything I was doing, she encouraged me to do it. So just after we met, I put on a gallery show at Robert Fraser Gallery in London, which is about one of the only sort-of swinging kind-of places London had. And I put on a show there called ‘You Are Here’. Out of the blue. I had never done anything like that before. It consisted of a bare gallery and a big white canvas that was round and it just had my writing on it: ‘you are here’ and I dedicated it to Yoko. You came in on the top floor of the gallery. You had to go downstairs. And down at the bottom of the stairs were lots of different charity cans like RSPCA, animal and cancer funds and dogs and people – the room was full of them. And you had to get through all these different charity cans – you know, to put money in. And people put money in. I wrote to a lot of charities telling them about the exhibition. I had a lot of nice letters and a lot of charity boxes back. There are no hidden secrets. My art is in fact displaying these boxes for charity. And you got to the other end of the room and on the left side of the wall was this big, big canvas with ‘You Are Here’.The invitation measures 17.75cm x 10.25cm (5 inches x 4 inches). Artist: Andy Warhol (American, 1928 - 1987). Title: "Andy Warhol and His Plastic Inevitable [1st printing] [announcement/oversize postcard]". Medium: Color lithograph. Date: Composed 1967. Dimensions: Overall size: 8 x 5 in. (203 x 127 mm).Pricing:   Starting Price: $300  Reserve Price: N.A.  Auction Sale Price Estimate: $400/500Lot Note(s): Signed by Warhol in black marker, lower right. Edition unknown, presumed small. Light cream wove paper. Full margins. Fine impression. Fine condition. Comment(s): Scarce, and rare signed by Warhol. Designed by Wes Wilson. The postcard for the famous event, unlike the poster with the same image, was authorized by Bill Graham and first printed early in 1967 along with the second printing of the poster. The colors of the card match the colors of the first and second printings of the poster. The card was printed by the West Coast Lithograph Co., San Francisco (their imprint verso), who also printed the second printing of the poster. The postcard was subsequently reprinted by Wes Wilson in 1993. Since the poster had a total of three printings, and concert postcards are generally issued before the event, the 1967 printing of the postcard is often erroneously referred to as a second printing, when in fact it was the first. The first printing can be differentiated from the second by the colors ("Andy Warhol and His Plastic Inevitable" is white in the first, pink in the second; orange lettering in the first vs. red/orange in the second); no small letters under the image lower left in the first vs. the addition of "© 1966 Wes Wilson BG 8-3/PS 33" in the second, the change in the small letters lower right from "Wes Wilson 661-5362" in the first to "Wes Wilson '66" in the second, the deletion on the verso of the printer's information on the second printing, the smaller size (8 x 5 on the first, 7 x 5 on the second), and the paper color (pale cream on the first, white on the second). Artist: Andy Warhol (American, 1928 - 1987). Title: "Brillo Box #2". Medium: Color inks on stiff paperboard. Date: Composed The box produced prior to 1963. Pricing:   Starting Price: $800  Reserve Price: N.A.  Auction Sale Price Estimate: $1,200/1,500Lot Note(s): Signed c1968 in black marker, center left. Quantity unknown, few survive. Printed on thin grey-brown stiff paperboard. Quality printing. Very good to fine condition; minor wear at edges; includes the unused pad. Dimensions: 3 x 2 3/4 x 1 in. (7.6 x 7 x 2.5 cm.). Comment(s): The most recent auction record we could find of a Brillo Box in this rare size is a sale for $2,250 at Auctionata, New York, January 19th, 2016, lot #35. In the mid-1960s Warhol carried his consumer-product imagery into the realm of sculpture. Calling to mind a factory assembly line, Warhol employed carpenters to construct numerous plywood boxes identical in size and shape to supermarket cartons. Then he painted and silkscreened the boxes with logos of different consumer products, including Brillo soap pads. When Warhol first exhibited them at the Stable Gallery in 1964 they caused great controversy. In reference to the boxes he later said that he "wanted something ordinary," and it was this mundane, commercial subject matter that infuriated the critics. Shortly after the exhibition, Warhol, from time to time, began to sign actual supermarket Brillo boxes – our example is one of these. Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841 - 1919). Title: "Baigneuse debout, a Mi-Jambes". Medium: Original etching. Date: Composed c1906. Printed later. Dimensions: Overall size: 14 13/16 x 11 3/8 in. (376 x 289 mm). Image size: 6 3/4 x 4 5/16 in. (171 x 110 mm).Pricing:   Starting Price: $300  Reserve Price: N.A.  Auction Sale Price Estimate: $400/500Lot Note(s): Cream wove paper. Full margins. Very good impression. Fine condition. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Delteil 23; Stella 23. Comment(s): During the second half of the nineteenth century, France was experiencing a printmaking renaissance. Despite this artistic trend, Impressionists were not quick to adopt the medium as they were accustomed to painting in plein air. However, Renoir learned the medium, creating his first etching in 1890 and his first lithograph two years later. During this time, Renoir was 49 and already an established painter. Yet, he executed a total of 59 prints in his lifetime, producing almost equal amounts of lithographs and etchings. Impressively, he was able to develop his own style of etching independent of his development as a painter [courtesy Masterworks Fine Art]. [2646-3-300-NA]

Abrams, Inc., 2004. Comment(s): Warhol's lifetime Tiffany Christmas cards are rare, and extremely rare signed. The most recent sale price we found of a card, unsigned and without the envelope, was $3,000 at Christie's New York, December 1st, 2014, lot #62. In 1956, in addition to all the work Warhol was getting drawing shoes and bags, he was commissioned to design Christmas cards for Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Warhol's cards were then published by Tiffany's every Christmas up to 1962, the year he started to exhibit his paintings of soup cans. Our example offered here is from the original first printing in 1960. The cards were subsequently reprinted in a slightly larger size in 1980. Eric William Ravilious (1903-1942): A Child's Handkerchief, lithographically printed on cotton, inscribed to verso Silk Handkechief: Purchased by Mary Monck Algiers May 1943 N.Africa whilst serving with F.A.N.Y (First Aid Nursing Yeomanry) Manufactured by mess rs Deans England, labelled for Miss Alma Taylor The Vicarage Froxfield Wilts, 43.5cm square (framed)Early in February 1941, while Eric Ravilious was working as a War Artist, he wrote to E.M.O'Rourke Dickey at the Ministry of Information, 'I've just had a long visit from a Mr. Gerald Holtom who seems very much to want designs for textiles for some Cotton Board. It would make a change to do this for a bit, and he assures me the whole thing is urgent and necessary'.The Cotton Board had been founded to raise standards of design and improve exports. As Helen Binyon relates in Eric Ravlious 1983, Gerald Holtom had found a firm in Lancashire which produced handkerchiefs printed by lithography, an unusual printing process for textiles, but one in which Ravilious was becoming increasingly interested. Holtom explained that he proposed displaying 'appropriate decorative handkerchiefs and scarves ... at the travelling exhibitions of War Artists' and A.F.S Artists' work in the U.S.A' Ravilious wrote to Helen Binyon on 1st April 1941, 'The cotton prints are being tried out (by lithography) and the first experiment is a child's handkerchief - you shall have one if it comes off well.'The Child's Handkerchief by Eric Ravilious exists in two forms. A proof on paper, printed in two blues with trial workings for pattern designs in the margin, is presumaly the first version of the design, possibly done as a trial to test the capacity of the fabric printing process. Ravilious then apears to have reworked and simplified the design, using dark grey and dark green for the detailed work, with bands of yellow for the tape measures and across the numbers, somewhat in the style of the Wedgwood Alphabet mug. This second version is only found printed on cotton, with unhemmed edges. The small number of known copies (less than five) suggests that it was carried to proof stage but never issued commercially. The handkerchief is inscribed 'To John' in the tiny oval between the figures 11 and 12. This is John Ravilious, eldest child of Eric and Tirzah Ravilious, born 1935. Eric Ravilious was lost on a flight from Iceland in September 1942, while serving as a War Artist.

Christopher Wood (1901-1930) "Footbridge on the Seine" Signed and dated 1924, pen and ink, 19.5cm by 30cm Provenance: The Redfern Gallery, London, Purchaser R. Gathorne-Hardy Esq., January 1945 The Estate of Mrs Markova Noel Loaned to Sheffield Museums Trust Christopher Wood (1901-1903), in his short life, became held in high regard amongst artistic circles in both London and Paris, being now remembered as a youthful genius.Born near Liverpool, he began drawing whilst recovering from septicaemia aged 14. After studying architecture and medicine for just a year at university, he moved to London in 1920. Here he met an art collector, who invited him to Paris, where he studied drawing a the Académie Julien. He was drawn effortlessly into fashionable artistic circles, where he met Augustus John and the diplomat Antonio de Gandarillas, whom he moved in with and was supported by. Gandarillas also introduced him to the likes of Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and George Auric, along with opium. Following the last-minute cancellation of a commission for designs for the Ballets Russe, Wood moved back to London, becoming first a member of the exhibiting collectives the London Group, and then the Seven and Five Society.Formatively, he exhibited with Ben and Winifred Nicholson in 1927, with whom he would become close friends. Wood accompanied the Nicholsons on painting trips to Cumberland and Cornwall, and in St. Ives discovered Alfred Wallis, whose ‘primitive’ expressionism helped him develop his own style. In 1929 he was given a solo show at Arthur Tooth & Sons, and a rather less successful joint exhibition with Ben Nicholson in Paris. Having had a painting expedition to Brittany, the resulting paintings were due to be exhibited at Wertheim Gallery in London. However, Wood was struck by a train whilst travelling back from meeting his mother, thought to be suicide brought on by psychosis, despite being reported as an accident at the time. Posthumously, his work was widely exhibited. The piece is on buff paper. Slight cockling to the paper. There are black lines to the outer edges in places. Slight time staining to the paper and the odd minor sporadic foxing spot in places, for example to the right corner of the top edge, to the knee of the figure left corner. Not examined out of the frame. (see images).

Henry Moore OM, CH, RBA, RBS (1898-1986) “Head” (1957/58) Signed, black crayon, 39cm by 30cmProvenance: Given to Mervyn Levy by the artist following the publication of his book "Drawing and Sculpture" in 1970 according to inscription verso Clark Art, CheshireHenry Moore is perhaps the most celebrated sculptor of the 20th century, and his monumental semi-abstract sculptures had a profound effect on the course of British Art. Achieving global recognition in his lifetime, Moore’s distinctive brand of modernism caused a British sculptural Renaissance.Moore was born in Castleford, a small mining town in West Yorkshire, in 1898. After initially training as a teacher, he served in the Army during the First World War. However, after being injured he was awarded a rehabilitation grant that afforded him the opportunity to study at Leeds School of Art before going on to the Royal College of Art in London.Whilst studying in London Moore became absorbed with so called ‘Primitive Art’ in the British Museum. Shying away from the Classical ideal, which was all-pervasive in Western Art, he instead drew inspiration from the imagery of the ancient world, and from African and Oceanic cultures which idolised the female/maternal figure.Moore began sculpting simple, powerful forms redolent of ancient objects, with a distinct focus on female figures and family groups. Close study of the natural world led Moore to create his abstracted figures, at once both alien and familiar, using organic shapes taken from a line of hills, a massive rock formation, or a sea-smoothed pebble on a beach. The abstraction of organic forms developed in parallel in the work of Barbara Hepworth, whom Moore had known since their days at Leeds School of Art.Having come under the influence of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in the 1930s, his work had taken on a darker edge with a greater degree of abstraction and more distorted forms. This was exacerbated by the outbreak of the Second World War, during which Moore became an official war artist and moved away from his characteristic female and maternal images as his primary focus. Moore created a powerful series of drawings of huddled figures in underground shelters, before returning to his hometown of Castleford to visit the colliery in which his father had worked to depict miners toiling at the coal face. These works were filled with a pathos and pain, which he later expressed in austere pieces such as his Helmet series. After WWII, Moore became very focussed on Helmet Head and Heads. During the 1950's he explored many varations on this subject (see lot 573). Slight time staining to the paper, especially to the outer edges. Slight cockling to the paper and handling creases to the outer edges. Brown thumb mark left of bottom edge by design? Possible pen mark diagonal from the left edge down to the right to the left of the head approximately 5cm. Small brown marks under the signature and below centre of right edge. The odd very tiny sporadic foxing spot in evidence. Some light surface dirt and debris trapped under the glass. Not examined out of the frame.
