Good hallmarks to bottom, although makers mark is rubbed. External measurements; 31x22cm and internal aperture 23cm x 15cm approx.
RARE FIRST WORLD WAR TANK SPLATTER MASK: Pte Charles Henry Boyce 1898 - 1975 An original WWI First World War tank driver's splatter mask. Full leather eye mask, with slits to the eye pieces and a chain mail guard to the chin area. With original head strap. These masks were introduced in early 1917 to protect the crew from splinters caused by steel particles which flew around the inside of the tank as it was hit by projectiles. Comes with full provenance, including a photograph of Boyce (photocopy of original), and Boyce's own copy of ' Tank Tales by Tank Major Eric Wood , 1919 ' edition, inscribed to the front cover in pencil ' Pte C. H. Boyce, 16th Tank Battn. British Army Of The Rhine '. Comes with a copy of his Death Certificate. The following being direct from the family who have consigned this collection: ' Granddad Boyce joined the tank regiment at 16 yrs, he wanted to join the RAF but he was too young. He was a driver because he was so small and was in a tank with 5 others. He met my Gran in London . As traditional with this age group they never discussed this after the war. Granddad had 3 daughters, one of which was my mother. ' The family also had an article published in the East Anglian Daily Times ( http://www.eadt.co.uk/ea-life/flashback_a_wonderful_old_soldier_is_remembered_1_3040280 ) which reads: He served in the British Army of the Rhine with "B" Coy 16th Tank Battalion which he joined as a 16-year-old at Hilden. In the Second World War he served in the ARP in Bury St Edmunds. He then lived in Lower Baxter Street. He then went on to the West Suffolk Civil Defence Association until it was abandoned. He loved the parades and was always ready to help where it was needed. He was a porter at Boots Chemist until he retired at the age of 70. A copy of the article is included in the collection. A rare and interesting piece of First World War history.

The folding base intricately carved, the top with delicate brass inlay. To the centre is the Royal Artillery motif and latin ' Ubioue Cuoeas Etcloria Duount '. Small sized, well proportioned.

Top right hand side pages are tatty, edges tatty some ripped, creased, some pages becoming loose in bindings, water damage to lower edges. Some edges folded over. Pages 500 - 501 have dark mark - see images. New Testament - the New Testament page has a repair to bottom, see images. After page 1143, 12 un-numbered pages starting Index to the Holy Bible, which is most of the pages, and one page of tables Scriptures. At the beginning of the Bible is the title frontispage, one page To the Most High and Mighty Prince James, 5 pages Translators to the Reader. Genesis - binding various scratches, marks, loose sections of leather, rips, etc. Book of Common Prayer - frontispiece 4 pages The Contents of This Book, then the Preface with considerable repairs to the first page, next page headed Of Ceremonies also with significant restoration, verso is Proper Lessons to be Read at Morning and Evening Prayer ...., the next has the same title and has significant repairs, verso is The Calendar with the Table of Lessons starting on January. One side of the page per month all the way to December. Verso of December Tables and Rules titled Tables and Rules for the Moveable and Immoveable ..... Next page is titled A Table to Find Easter Day, verso Another Table to Find Easter .... Next page A Table for the Moveable Feasts ...., verso A Table for the Moveable Feasts. Next page General Tables for Finding where Dominical of Sunday Letter, verso Table iii. Next page The Order of Morning Prayer with signficant repair to lower right corner.
