A rare ivory satin doublet and breeches worn by Sir James Saumarez to the coronation of King George IV, 1821, the Elizabethan style doublet and trunk hose trimmed with silver braid, the shoulder lining inscribed in pencil 'Saumarez', a paper label to the breeches 'Sir James Saumarez'; with pair of white kid leather ankle boots with crimson satin tops, trimmed with rosettes, the soles bearing remains of the inked name, (4) Provenance James Saumarez, Lord de Saumarez, Admiral, (1757-1836), third son of Matthew Saumarez of Guernsey. At the age of thirteen he began his illustrious naval career, serving initially in the Mediterranean and The Levant. He joined the 'Bristol' of 58 guns which sailed to North America under Captain Peter Parker and took part in the disastrous attack on Fort Sullivan in 1776. This was to be the first of many sea battles in which he was involved, as a youth serving in both the 'Victory' and the 'Fortitude.' In 1781 he became Commander of his own vessel and gained acclaim for his seamanship and courage, engaging the French in numerous battles. One of his most memorable actions was at Cadiz in 1801 where he destroyed two Spanish three deckers, captured a French two-decker and drove the rest of the enemy ships into headlong rout into Cadiz.
