ATTRIBUTED TO SIR GODFREY KNELLER, Bt (1646-1723) PORTRAIT OF ADMIRAL SIR JOHN LEAKE (1656-1720) Quarter length, wearing a blue coat, russet waistcoat, white neckcloth and a long wig, within a painted oval, oil on canvas 74 x 61.5cm. * John Leake was born in London, the son of a master gunner. He joined the Navy at sixteen and was earmarked for promotion following distinguished service at the Battle of Texel in August 1673 when barely seventeen: he was Master Gunner by 1683, then Commander (1688), Captain (1689), Commodore and Rear Admiral (both 1702), Commander in Chief at Portsmouth and Vice Admiral (1703) and Admiral (1706). He held commands on ten vessels and was active in the Third Anglo-Dutch War, the Nine Years' War and the War of Spanish Succession as well as the Twelfth Siege of Gibraltar. In addition to service throughout the Mediterranean, he took eight ships to Newfoundland during the War of the Spanish Succession and destroyed fifty one enemy vessels. He rose to First Lord of the Admiralty in 1710 and was also an MP for Rochester from 1708-1715. Leake was a benefactor of St Mary's Church in Beddington, Surrey, but died at his town house in Greenwich in 1720. He left a widow Christiane (nee Hill) and a son. Remembered with affection and respect by those who knew him, one tribute in 1812 described him as `virtuous, humane and gallant .. one of the greatest admirals of his time`. Leake sat to Sir Godfrey Kneller for a larger format portrait in c.1705-1712 (National Maritime Museum). Despite his significant role in British Naval history, few portraits of Leake are recorded. Leake's pocket watch will be offered at Lawrences in a forthcoming auction. Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter. ++ Lined; replaced stretchers; some associated retouching

ATTRIBUTED TO JOSEPH WALTER (1783-1856) HMS ROYAL ADELAIDE LYING AT ANCHOR IN THE HAMOAZE AT DEVONPORT WITH A LONGBOAT CARRYING DISTINGUISHED VISITORS HEADING INSHORE OFF HER STERN, THE BUILDINGS OF THE ROYAL WILLIAM VICTUALLING YARD ON THE OPPOSITE BANK Bears signature and date 1837, oil on canvas 68 x 88.5cm. * The first rate Royal Adelaide was laid down in Plymouth Dockyard as the London in May 1819. A larger version of Nelson's Victory, she displaced 4,122 tons, measured 198 feet in length with a 54 foot beam, and mounted 104 guns on three decks. Launched on 28th July 1828 in the presence of the Lord High Admiral, the Duke of Clarence (later King William IV), she was christened by his Duchess and immediately renamed Royal Adelaide in honour of the future Queen Adelaide. Spending most of her career as Port Admiral's flagship at Plymouth, she was transferred to Chatham in 1891, where she served as Receiving Ship until 1904, and was finally broken up at Dunkirk in 1905. Provenance: London, Sothebys, 5th December 1923, lot 139 as by J. Walter, `A 74 gun ship in harbour`, from the Maude collection. We are grateful to Michael Naxton for his assistance with the cataloguing of this picture. ++ Lined; retouching; craquelure; some flaked losses in the sky; craquelure

Lot 1640

WYNFORD DEWHURST (1864-1941) VALLEY OF THE CREUSE Signed, bears title upon a label on the stretcher, oil on canvas (stamped for L. Besnard) 59 x 72cm. * Despite studying in the studio of Jean Leon Gerome and being subjected to the master's rigorously classical methods, Dewhurst became a fervent champion of Impressionism and extolled the skill of Claude Monet in particular. In his divisive work, `Impressionist Painting: Its Genesis and Development` (London,1904), Dewhurst posited the heretical idea of Impressionism being essentially English in origin as Turner and Constable had been the first artists to explore the true potential of light and colour in landscape. Nonetheless, Dewhurst's reverence for Monet was absolute and he adopted much the same palette and technique in his own intensely lit mature landscapes. In What is Impressionism, published in Contemporary Review in 1911, the artist recalled his own Damascene moment upon seeing the revelatory quality of the light on the Seine between Paris and Rouen: "I remember distinctly, during the summer of 1901, at Les Andelys-on-Seine, that upon two days and for two hours in the afternoons of those days all Nature, animate and inanimate, bore the aspect of things seen under a strong glare of violet light, exactly as though a tinted glass were suspended between the sun's rays and the earth. The effect was most curious and disturbing. Nature appears to be toneless and flat. Highlights and shadows are attenuated almost to extinction, whilst in this dull purple glare the heat became more intense than ever, possibly through lack of wind, for all was still." At first, the choice of violet hues seems counter intuitive in a rural landscape lush with green hills and blue water, but Dewhurst shared the Impressionists' wonder for the interpretation of light upon objects. The fractal and prismatic qualities of light enchanted the Impressionists and, foremost among them, Monet saw the potential for creating a preternatural atmosphere in his work by the use of an intense blueish light that bordered on purple. Monet's `Valley of the Creuse` (Boston, Museum of Fine Arts) dates from 1889 whilst Dewhurst's `Sunrise Effect: Valley of the Creuse` was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1916. The idyllic, unpeopled majesty of these subjects may be seen as a calming counterpoint to the ravages of the Great War taking place just a little further north at the Western Front. A similar subject entitled `The Blue Valley`, c.1908, 81.3 x 100.3cm, is in the Manchester City Art Gallery (the gift of E. A. Knight of Knutsford, Cheshire) ++ A few small flaked losses, most notably in the sky upper right
