Mongolia.- Borradaile (A. A.) Notes of a Journey in Northern Mongolia in 1893, in The Geographical Journal vol. There are also detailed descriptions of the Bedouin tribes and their customs.

Hartley wrote her monumental compendium of English cookery through the ages over a 30 year period.

Out of the Silent Planet was dedicated Lewis' elder brother, Warren Hamilton Lewis who has written a witty and charming poem to the front free endpaper by way of presentation.
Mahomet An exercise in English verse. Written in 1816, with an untraced 3pp. ms. poem at end, occasional ink passage marking or underlining, some foxing or spotting, heavier to first couple of ff., contemporary drab wrappers, short tear to upper wrapper, 8vo, [S. and R. Bentley, Dorset Street], [c.1816].⁂ Unrecorded. The ms. poem is entitled "The Burning harp to its mistress".
Newton's Principia Mathematica.- Pfautz (Christoph) Acta Eruditorum Anno M DC LXXXVIII, 13 engraved plates, most folding, woodcut initials, ink stamp to title, bookplate to title verso, occasional spotting, including to plates, some light offsetting, library label to front pastedown, contemporary vellum, spine toned, 4to, Leipzig, J. Grossium and J.F. Gleditsch, 1688.⁂ This edition of the Acta includes a first edition of the important early review of Newton's 'Principia' (1687); pp. 303-315. Of the four reviews which had appeared by the end of 1688, this review in the Acta was the most detailed, and was comprehensive enough to provide many in Europe without access to the Principia itself with a fairly full account of its contents (Gjertsen, Newton Handbook, 1986, p. 472), almost in the style of an extended table of contents. The Acta review is anonymous, but evidence now supports identification of the author as Christoph Pfautz (1645-1711), who being a professor of mathematics at the University of Leipzig, was able to grasp the principal features of Newton's treatment of limits, and to appreciate the significance of the purely mathematical features of Newton's presentation. Pfautz's review gained contemporary fame when it was cited by Leibniz in his own article, 'Tentamen de Motuum Coelestium Causis', in the Acta in 1689. This volume of the Acta also contains three articles by the physicist Denis Papin (1647-1713), two articles by the astronomer Gottfried Kirch (1639-1710) and three articles by the mathematician Jakob Bernoulli (1655-1705).
Le Fanu (Joseph Sheridan) The House by the Church-Yard, 3 vol. in 1, first edition, second issue, "Second Edition", half-title to vol. 1 only, occasional spotting, bookseller's description and small book-label to pastedown, original purple cloth, neatly and sympathetically rebacked, retaining original backstrip, very light fading to spine, spine ends and corners a little bumped, some light rubbing to extremities, but a very good example overall, [Carter, Binding Variants pp.128-9; Sadleir 1379; Tymn 2-61], 8vo, Tinsley, Brothers, 1863.⁂ Le Fanu's masterpiece of supernatural fiction and a notoriously rare title in first edition. Though stated as second edition on the title, this is in fact the second issue of the first edition, as noted by Sadleir. The present cloth binding was likely that for a remainder one-volume edition but is not recorded in either Sadleir or Carter.
Habrecht II (Isaac) Planiglobium Coeleste ac Terrestre, edited by Johann Christoph Sturm,14 engraved engraved plates, a few with small tears at folds and one paper repair to verso, illustrations, woodcut head-pieces and initials, G4 torn away at lower margin (not affecting text), some spotting and light foxing, dedication leaf heavily browned, lacking front endpaper, contemporary calf, spine gilt, upper joint cracked, lower starting, extremities rubbed, [Houzeau and Lancaster 3039; Zinner 5089], 4to, Nuremburg, Christoph Gerhard, [1666].⁂ Rare with the full complement of plates, including the two planispheres. This work is a new first edition enlarged and edited by Habrecht's student Sturm, of his famous treatise published in two parts in 1628 and 1629. Sturm augmented the text, reprinted the original two planispheres from the same plates (one of them is still dated 1628), and added to them a further 12 plates, including two handsome polar projections of the world and ten engravings showing the various parts of his celestial and terrestrial globes. "The plates, superbly executed by Jacob van der Heyden, were probably intended to be mounted and assembled to form several instruments, each with a revolving plate measuring 27cm in diameter and a movable pointer. Each was to be supported on an approximately 12cm base" (W.P. Watson, Cat. 18).

Similarly, there are twenty-five new illustrations (including twenty-two instruments and three whole skeletons). Perhaps overshadowed contemporaneously by others such as Ambroise Paré (1510-1590), Franco has since been recognised as one of the greatest surgeons of the Renaissance and a forerunner of urology. Likewise, his significant influence in bringing operative surgery back into the realm of regular surgical practice has been subsequently fully appreciated. Very rare; RBH lists only three other copies at auction in the last eighty years.

Maugham (William Somerset) Ashenden, or, The British Agent, first edition, some scattered spotting, original cloth, very light sunning to spine, dust-jacket prixed at 7/6, a few neat repairs and some light retouching to head of spine and corners, light toning to flaps, but a bright and excellent example overall, preserved in folding chemise and custom morocco-backed slip-case, [Stott A37a], 8vo, 1928.⁂ An excellent copy of the author's spy stories, a cornerstone of the spy thriller genre based largely on his own undercover experiences in Europe & Russia. It is believed that initially there were 31 stories but 14 had to be destroyed on Churchill's orders as they were in breach of the Official Secrets Act. Many authors of spy fiction have acknowledged the importance and merit of this work over the years, including John Le Carré, Graham Greene, Eric Ambler, Julian Symons and Raymond Chandler.
Spanish Armada.- [Cecil (William, Lord Burghley)] Certaine Advertisements out of Ireland concerning the Losses and Distresses happened to the Spanish Navie, first edition, mostly black letter, title with woodcut device, woodcut initial and headpiece, some light surface soiling but a very good copy generally, Macclesfield blind-stamp to head of title and A2 and facsimile bookplate to pastedown, modern antique-style half pigskin, light rubbing to covers, [STC 14257], sm. 4to, Vautrollier for Richard Field, 1588.⁂ The Macclesfield copy of this contemporary account of the destruction of the Spanish Armada. The present work is the second part of The Copie of a Letter sent out of England to don Bernadin Mendoza, both of which are often attributed to Burghley, among whose possessions the manuscript was discovered.
Murder in Lewes.- Warning to Young Men (A); or, A Man of Bloods: in An Impartial Relation of the Horrid Murther Acted by Robert Brinkhurst on his Friend and himself at Lewis in Sussex, first edition, title within typographic border, some light foxing and marginal staining, later blank leaves at beginning and end, 19th century blind-stamped calf, 8vo, Printed for Tho. Parkhurst, 1680.⁂ Very rare, with ESTC locating only 3 copies (BL, Columbia and Huntington). Provenance: Edward Barrett Curteis (bookplate on rear pastedown); Mark Antony Lower (bookplate on front pastedown and his ms notes about the book and subjects to front blank leaves and inscription "Presented to M. A. Lower by James Orchard Halliwell [Shakespearean scholar]" dated 1866.
Grisham (John) A Time to Kill, first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author dated 9-1-89 to title, ink ownership inscription of recipient to endpaper, original cloth-backed boards, light bumping to spine ends, dust-jacket, a few small neat repairs to spine ends, light creasing to extremities, an excellent example overall, 8vo, New York, Wyndwood Press, 1989.⁂ The author's scarce first novel. Personally published by the author via a small publisher in the south east United States, the author was apparently subsequently reduced to selling them from the boot of his car until word of mouth took effect.
