JOHN PIPER (1903-1992) - Stage design for Death in Venice, signed in pencil and numbered, screenprint in colours, 31"x 27". John Piper designed the sets for the first staging of the opera `Death in Venice` in 1973. The opera, by the composer Benjamin Britten, was based on the novella by Thomas Mann. Myfanwy Piper, John Piper`s wife wrote the English libretto.
A silver spoon by Leslie Durbin, London 1949, the oval bowl with a heavy and long rat-tail to the reverse, the stem with reeded bands, monogrammed, 18cm (7in) long, 62g (2 oz) gross. Leslie Durbin (1913-2005) was apprenticed to Omar Ramsden. He taught at the Royal College of Art and at the LCC Central School. His first workshop was established with Leonard Moss in 1949. Durbin designed the Queen`s head Jubilee mark. He has been awarded many honours including Member of the Royal Victorian Order, CBE and the Garrard Gold Medal for outstanding contribution to the trade. Ltd, London 1938, with a ram`s horn thumbpiece to the stepped domed cover, an engraved wine ewer inside, an S-scroll handle with a cross pate terminal and a moulded base, extensively engraved for presentation to D. A George III silver vase shape tea urn by Charles Wright, London 1770, the waisted cover with a vase finial, beaded rims and twin loop handles, an ebony spigot and on a square base with bracket feet, engraved with a crest and an armorial, 51cm (20in) high, 2650g (85.2 oz) gross (the cover and base unmarked). See Grimwade no. 428 and the biography on p. 711. The mark no. 428 of 1775 is the first recorded mark of Wright on his own but the 1773 parliamentary report shows him working alone at Ave Mary Lane. It is well to note that there was a missing register at Goldsmiths Hall prior to 1773. The crest and the arms of RADCLIFFE impaling BOARD or BOURDE of Ireland. Two pairs of George II silver cast candlesticks, by John Cave, London 1751 and by Frederick Kandler, London 1756, the nozzles with egg-and-dart borders, the vase-shape sockets with egg-and-dart borders and chased quatrefoil panels, the square baluster stems with scales and husks, reeded knops and domes with leaves, the shaped circular bases with shell and quatrefoils bands and egg-and-dart borders, engraved with an armorial and a motto `Forte Scutum Salus Ducum`, 27cm (10.5in) high (Cave) and 25.5cm (10in) high (Kandler), 4160g (133.75 oz) gross (the bases fully marked, the Kandler pair with standard mark to the sockets, the detachable nozzles unmarked). The arms of FORTESCUE quartering CLINTON. See Grimwade no. 1228 for the first maker`s mark and nos. 691-2 for the second. See also Schroder, Timothy `British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean Museum` Oxford 2009, vol. 1, p. 462, cat. 180 for a closely related set of four by Paul Crespin, London 1736-7. The author notes that no clear design source emerges but the set in the Ashmolean are predated by a set of the previous year by the Paris goldsmith Nicholas Outrebon. Charles William Cummins (both brothers served with the First Battalion Essex Regiment, one medal unnamed) with two cap badges, mounted and framed.
A Christofle tea service, 20th century, comprising; a tray 40cm wide, tea pot 10cm high, milk jug 8cm high, sugar bowl and cover and hot water jug 10cm high, and a further Christofle jug 11cm high, all bearing `Grande Hotel Do Porto` ribbon, impressed marks (6) Designed by the Architect Silva Sardina, the Grande Hotel do Porto opened its doors in 27th March 1880. It was thought to be the first Grand Hotel in town with all the glory of the end of the century. The luxury of the hotel could be seen in many details of its interior decoration: the French mirrors, the golden florins, the sumptuous marble columns. Through the years it was `the place to be` for many of Porto`s high society. Politicians, writers, spies, war refugees, artists and members of the nobility have passed through the Hotel.
